Engine idling high
« on: January 01, 2006, 07:27:03 AM »

I have had this issue for a week or two where my engine will idle at 2000 rpms instead of the normal 700. When I shift into "drive", the rpms hang around 1000. Sometimes it goes back to normal after driving a while.

I took it to the dealership, but the problem didn't occur when it was in the shop (big surprise there!). They said it could be a dirty throttle body or injectors. There are no CEL's except for the power steering pressure switch, which I just received and will be changing when I have free time.

Any thoughts on what the problem could be? I tried runnning premium gas and some injector cleaner, but its still happening.

could be the throttle body plate not completely closing at idle, a good throttle body cleaning should cure that. i kinda doubt that's the problem though. otherwise i would check if the throttle cable is hanging up or for any vacuum leaks. but usually vacuum leaks don't come and go like you stated. just what i would check first.

Ok, I gave the throttle body a good srubbin'....and the problem still persists.

A buddy at work is gonna give it a look for vaccum leaks by using SMALL amounts of ether, then listen for the engine to rev up.

As for slack in the accelerator cable, I will give that a shot too. It seems as if the throttle likes to hang open now too. I noticed that when I am braking, the engine will stay revved near 1K until I am at a complete stop.

Ok, I think its my Idle Air Control sensor (IAC...whatever ya call it). One of my inspectors at work told me to start the car, and tap on some of the sensors. When the idle begins to flux, then that is most likely one of the trouble spots. The only one that caused the idle to flux is the IAC.

I took it off and cleaned off all the connections from the throttle body, and it seems to have worked (I won't hold my breath!)

Nice to hear progress!! I'd grab a brand new one to be on the safe side though. I think autozone has them for like 60-65 bucks
