There seem to be lots of 4 cyl parts out but who has an underdrive pulley for the 2.5l v-6 and does doing away with the heavy damper cause the crank to break?
the damper that attahes the pulley to the engine...umm....i didnt think it was possible to remove this..unless i misunderstood and u guys are talking about something totally diff.
no, it's a damper. it helps to dampen vibrations internal to the crankshaft. the way the metal crankshaft reacts to the forces of a piston firing. doesn't involve the pulley driving belts at all.
per dave's link

The damper on the end of the crank shaft (IT IS A DAMPER.. THIS ISNT UP FOR DEBATE) is weighted to absorb and help cancel longitudial vibrations that travel from end to end on the crank shaft... think of the crankshaft like a tuning fork.. it has a natural frequency it will resonate on.. everytime the piston fires, the crankshaft will twist... and not twist like it's spinning.. twist as in deform.. the same way that connecting rods stretch at high rpms...

I wasnt saying it had anything to do with the belts..it had nothing..i had to install my udp..wasnt the easiest thing..so i got pretty familiar...the damper attaches to the udp and has some room for play...im not saying it doesnt dampen vibrations..cuz that's what dampers do..guess i shoulda thought of it that way before i gave my definition. but either ways..u dont even want to damage much less remove this thing.
i removed the factory pulley, the round 12 lb mass of factory metal...the damper comes out, but goes back..i attached the 8 0z pulley in its place...and bought new belts...the p/s belt size i got from JW worked fine, but i had to go two sizes up on the belt # he gave me for the a/c.
it wasnt removed entirely..it just pushes out like a brake piston and back in...except it goes back in a lot easier. so basically...with the pulley in place..u can move it a lil bit to a different position..it wouldnt stay though. think about pulling the p/s pulley to the left..then letting it go..then watch it go back to its original position.
Ok, having established the harmonic balancer is an integral part of NOT driving over the crankshaft...how many underdrive pulleys are there for the mitsu 2.5l v6...which one is cheapest...does it work and not break? Which one is best...does anyone have a used one? Does the battery stay charged...the ac blow cold and the engine not overheat after slowing everything down?
