depends on the oil. if its a synthetic oil its ok. not totally recomended but ok. a conventional or mix not so good. Filters have little to do with that they mostly make gas milage go down as long as it gets clean air its ok. but yes the lube and oil are pretty much musts and a tune up.

Well right now it's still get 18 mpg.. It's running on penzoil 10w-30 and a napa filter... I have a purolator filter for the next change but what type of 5w-30 oil would you reccomend that's not synthetic?

doesn't the manual state it can go 7500 miles between oil changes if it's more rural/hwy miles (less stop and go) and 3000 for more city driving? i think mine does. i still wouldn't go much over 3000… i think the most i've gone over has been, maybe, 4000 between changes.

18mpg!?! that's low as hello! i think you should be getting at least 23mpg city, rite? but i guess that depends on how you drive… how much u like to put your foot in it, lol

I didn't think 18mpg was that bad... Listen to this one... Two tanks ago I got 276 miles w/ 2 gallons left (18.41mpg) and the last tank I got 255 miles w/ 5.5 gallons left (22.21)... That's after a race on the highway at 115mph Grin Oh lots of stop n go in the city... Any recomendations on oil?

Penzoil is the absolute WORST oil you can use.  Use Castrol or Valvoline (although I have a bitter hatred for valvoline for personal reasons, not even their fault, just their factory rep is a thoughtless tool) I highly recommend Castrol.

I am sorry, I don't care what anyone says, 3000 mile changes on conventional oil, 5000 on Synthetic.  I am sure your motor might be fine but the filter will lose its ability to filter the particulates.  Especially with the detergent in todays oils.  6500 is too much.  I don't even care that the Royal Purple guy told me I could go 10,000 between oil changes I am still going to do it at 5000.

The reason Pennzoil is so bad is because it is wax based and will gum up your motor.   Not good.  Also if you are going to switch to synthetic from standard motor oil, do it in stages, don't just switch directly over it can do damage.  Run some Synthetic blend for a couple of oil changes then go full synthetic.  Also be careful with sythetics as it will leak out more efficiently.  Royal Purple has also been known to lubricate too well and I have heard of 4G63's spinning rod bearings after they switch from other brands.

amsoil is also good....i highly recomend synthetic though it just does better. also a simple way to keep metal filings out of the engine is to place a strong magnet on the oil pan near the lowest area and the plug. It gathers all the metal in it and does not allow it into the oil during an oil change simply take the magnet off and drain.

a blend of synth and conventional is also good. However since these are older cars sythetic does a little better unless your seals are shot, if they are not then the synthetic is actually much better for them and it preforms much better in heat than conventional.

good that you still recommend something u think is good even though you have personal hatred for it… a LOT of ppl won't do that.

i agree, i try to change my oil as close to 3000 as possible. something that works that hard for that long needs to be changed frequently, imo.

so if penzoil is like that, is that why i hear quaker state will gum your engine up as well?

i also recommend castrol. i use castrol gtx and the guy who changed my timing belt said the inside of my engine looked great for one with as many miles as mine has.

Amsoil is not API Certified I would not put it in my lawnmower no matter how good they say it is.  If you have any kind of warranty or anything it will be VOID.  Not that any of us have a warranty anymore but still...

There are magnetic drain plugs that you can buy for that purpose.  I have nothing against these as they probably help.  There are also magnets you can buy for your oil filter.

For more info on API certification for oil.  http://www.api.org/certifications/engineoil/categories/upload/EngineOilGuide2006.pdf

Would you have to buy those from a dealer or aftermarket?

Aftermarket.

NAPA Part # 704-1370 for the magnetic drain plug.  Works for both 4 and 6 cyl.

Listen.... Called my mechanic today. He wants me to go get full synthetic oil and put it right in over top the pennzoil... He won't take putting in part synthetic for an answer... So should I just get part synthetic and tell him " Here just put this in.. I'm paying ya for it."?
