hmmm this is making me think. The car runs relitivly smooth but i get better gassmilage (lower RPMs) at 45 than 55, could the timing be off? even if it runs smoothish lol its not the smoothest engine in the world but its not bad either.

Quote
Factors that can affect gas mileage.

Weight of the vehicle
Wind
temperature
grade of fuel
how many burritos you ate the night before and how many times you have farted in your car
air pressure in your tires
proximity to the sun
speed
fuel filter condition
fuel injector condition
if you are burning oil
what color your eyes are
how long your hair is
your brakes and how well they are working
gravity
donuts
humidity

all of these can cause very minute variables... do you really want us to figure out why one day you get .5 miles to the gallon less than the day before?
from my uncle a long time ago

ehem...like i said before...45mph should benefit u the best mileage for a stock sebring/avenger. ur engine is not doing that much work, but is still going at a significant enough speed. this is b/c ur in fourth, the engine is spinning slower, and having ur car at a higher total velocity.

dude.. i have 490 and my light is gonna turn on pretty soon.. 45 mph for best mileage??? when your engine bogs down and you have to give it alot of gas, that takes alot of fuel. There's somewhere i read that there's a happy medium between the effort it takes to move the car and engine rpms. i have about 3500 rpms at 80 and i get great mileage.

i need an engine overhaul is right....just the money is not here now i just emptied my account for tires(which were the cheapest i could get still cost me 250 due to the size and tread life)...and its costing a lot to keep up with the gas its a lose lose cause i can barely save anything.

ok, the best mileage point would take more than just the rpm measure. the higher u can go on a lower rpm, the better the mileage..if i can get a dyno sheet, or an hp curve for the 420a and 4g63, I could calculate the speed for best mileage...it probably wont be 45mph....I forgot to figure in that the amount of power it makes also plays a part. sorry about the misinformation.

I know with my 420A, i get between 24 & 27 driving back & forth to work. (7 miles, one way city driving but 45-55 mph speed limits)  If I go up north to my grandmother lakehouse (about 110 miles one way, freeway/empty country roads with 65 mph speed limits) I get around 31-33 mpg.  One thing that baffles my mind is i have never put in more than 14 gallons in my tank but it says we have a 16.9 gallon tank.  My gauge aways is on the "E" but it only needs 14.2 gallons at that time.

its more the efficiency of the particular engine. a lot of gas is going to waste in ur case aaron. since these engines are all basically the same..(unlike ppl w/ unlimited differences) u should be able to figure out what's different...u should list all that's been done to ur car since u owned it...how u do ur oil change an all that.

Oil is full synthetic i do it myself. As for that i have done nothing to the car other than a stereo(which is added weight granted but not enough for this kind of problem) and brake and alignment jobs most of which i have also done myself. i keep the tires at the correct pressure actually just a little above. I cant vouch for anything prior to buying it. I have no real thing to go off of though since when i got the car i was 18 and hot headed and drove to fast to often...i didnt slam it just drove it quickly...a lot. Now im 20 and i drive much more sensibly its just not paying off to well. I know the car didnt get that great of gas milage even when i pounded it though....It has been hit though, in the front drivers side had the rad support replaced a new radiator new hood bumper fender hadlights and a few other odds and ends there...mostly cosmetic it did push the computer up and i had a bad time getting it home and the trip back to the body shop was VERY bad(stalling, over heating loss of all electronics, loss of engine power i would floor it and it would not move...), however when i got it back again it worked well enough.

My guess is that it needs new spark plugs(havent changed those...i know i should) new ignition wires, and a good fuel system flush and cleaning, i think the timing is off but if it is its not by much since there is very little vibration. even with the coolant leak the car never over heats so its not that( i have a two liter bottle in the car with water just in case).
