Painters I need your advice (auto not home)
« on: November 22, 2007, 11:09:26 PM »

I have a 240sx that's pretty beat up.  I just bought a REALLY nice air compressor and decided to try my hand at painting the car.  I understand about sanding and taping and all the stuff I learned doing rattle can jobs.

What I need to know is what should I buy for painting cars?  What type of spray gun (are there different kinds?), I've heard about some kind of moisture catch, what's the deal?  And any other random advice that will keep the car looking good!

OK get a good regulator , and a moisture trap for the feed line from the air compressor , I have a small disposible one that goes directly before the gun ...
one drop of moisture can ruin the paint job ...
There are two types of guns , expensive high end guns , and disposible guns ...
The high end Sata's I have are $2k/$3k , you can get lower end guns at harbor freight or northern hydraulics for around $200
I'd recomend an HVLP for a beginning painter (more forgiving)
If possible get one with interchangeable tips for the primer/paint/clear

BV beat me to it.. I need not say much more then...

It will cost alot!.. and half the paint job is WHERE you paint it. Dust free environment. Ventilated. Right temperature.

When you say regulator, what do you mean?  This is my first air compressor, and I have NO idea how to properly paint something, so that lost me.  As for the moisture tap, I'm assuming I can get that anywhere?  I followed that link, I'll probably pick up a gun from there after Christmas.

Thanks!

The link has the regulator with it ... it controls how much air the gun gets fed ... the moisture TRAP is available at northern too

When you need stuff call me.  I do paint out of my store and might be able to hook you up some deals.  As always.

I am hoping to get sent to paint school here soon too so I will be more useful.

One more thing, if you do buy a gun make sure you get a gravity feed not a siphon feed.  They are easier to use.  Also tip size is very important, but that depends on the type of paint you pick to use too.  BASF usually a 1.4 tip, its pretty much universal, so long as the compressor can keep up, and deliver enough PSI to the gun you will get great atomization of your paint.

One other thing, pick a system, use it all the way through.  Dont use PPG primer for BASF paint, have seen some issues with people doing this.

PS. you get what you pay for, SATA by far makes the best guns (my opinion) I use the Sata Jet RP Digital 3000 and Sata Jet HVLP digital 3000 (ebay 500-1000 bucks) and they are wicked guns, you can get almost glass like finish like my GTA hood.  Cheaper guns will still give an good finish, just depends on how fussy you are Tongue  On that note you can grab a 60 dollar gun from princess auto/Lordco/Napa and wet sand and polish the finish and get the same results, more work less money.

and try not to paint in your garage during winter, you need + temperature for the primer/paint/clear coat to cure
and i hope your air compressor has big enough tank, for painting cars i think you need like at least 60 or 80 gallon tanks (i can be wrong on these numbers)

but honestly for the 240sx, screw glossy paint, get it looking flat black! get some air tools, extend some fenders, then just put some 16" wheels, mmmm i say 10" (rear) and 7.5" (front) wide wheels in gun metal finish (possible polished lip) and the rock with your C**c out  Grin Grin Grin
