So he's just doing the switch?

What price did he quote you for it?

If he has started taking the part off, you might have a small problem doing this. You are under no obligation to have him do the work. if he has ordered the part and can't tell you what the part is, he is bullsh*tting you around. I would take the car to another mechanic if he won't tell you what the part is. even though it may be 'special order', Nykon and I [Matt too] can atest that if it's ordered from the factory, we are given a 3-4 day RANGE of when to expect the order to arrive, unless we are given a guarenteed day. ALL THE MECHANIC HAS TO DO IS CALL HIS 'SUPPLIER' AND SEE WHEN THE DELIVERY IS DUE.
I very seriously doubt that he checked around everywhere for this 'mystery item'. Just simply corner him and tell him that he needs to give you the information you need or else you will be taking the car to a more dependable mechanic.

YOU are the customer. Sometimes you have to enforce that, and remind people of it.

There is a guy on ASEC that has had his car worked on by ERT for a VERY long time now and he hasn't been able to contact them for over 2 months. He paid the money up front for the parts and labor so there is no reason why he shouldn't have had his car back 2 months ago.

never ever ever pay up front. Good mechanics will let you take your car home and they'll call you when they get the part. Special order parts? Normally they get their stuff from the wrecking yard, auto parts store, or dealer, either way it doesn't take long for it to get there. Next time do it yoursef lol, then it'll cost $40 instead of $400.

Make sure to get a quote if he will tell you whats going on.  Oh yeah, there is never an excuse to not know when a part will come.
