Tire size
« on: June 18, 2007, 06:34:47 PM »

According to this site the stock tire size of our cars is  215/50HR17
http://www.theautochannel.com/vehicles/new/reviews/1998/heilig10039703.html

The tires on my car are 225/45HR17

And i recently bought some rims for my new car and I was wondering if they would fit on my current avenger until i got a new car...??

The tires on the new rims are 215/40ZR17 and I dont really know much about tire sizes so i was wondering if someone could elaborate what exactly the 225/215 meant and what the 45/40/50 meant

Please and thank you

Quote
The ratio (the middle #) is a percentage of the tire width.

In that example, 60% of 275 (the tire width) is larger than 75% of 205... therefore it has a taller side wall.

I hope that straightens things out.

By the way...              275          /            60             /             R-17
(Tire width)       (sidewall ratio)             (rim size)          <--------- Just to clear things up.
(in mm)         (% of tire width)           (in inches)

They will also fit on your Avenger with no problems.

Any 17inch tire will fit on a 17 inch rim, BUT you wanna make sure you have the same outside diameter so it doesnt throw off your speedometer. The first 2 numbers are inversely proportionate to each other. Stock size is 215/50/r17, if you INCREASE the first number to the next BIGGEST size (225) then the middle number has to DECREASE to the next LOWEST size (45). This will be a wider tire since the first number is going from 215 to 225. It also works the other way, you can decrease the first number to the next lowest size (205) which means you'll have to increase the middle number to the next biggest size (55). Also, the middle and last number is inversely proportionate to each other. As the rim size goes up an inch, then the middle number has to go down to the next lowest size. 18's would be 215/45/r18, if you put a 19inch rim on, your tire size would be 215/40/r19. If you wanna go wider, the next size would be 225/35/r19. 20inch rims would be 215/35/r20, which they dont make cuz its so narrow, so you'd have to go to the next wider tire, so 225/30/r20.  This is to keep the speedo working properly and the correct gap in your wheel well. I hate it when ppl put a low pro tire on and theres like 5 inches of gap from the tire to the wheel well. I hope this helps you out

This might help....

http://www.tsxclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14943

I know its from a TSX forum, but the stock TSX has the same tire and wheel size as the Sebring LXi and Avenger ES. If you can't see the page, let me know and I will copy and paste the info.

I hope this helps.
