My girlfriends Eclipse is getting pretty bad gas mileage, somewhere around the 200 miles to the tank. I changed the plugs, wires, and 1 02 sensor. It was about $120 worth of stuff, an then she wrecked the car the next day lol. She said tho that it didnt seem to have changed anything or done any better. Only the front bumper an hood was damaged so she'll be getting it back anyday now. Was wondering if anyone could think of anything. I did notice cylinders 1 and 2 had quite a bit of oil on the sparkplugs, in fact it was dripping when I took them out. The car only has about 80,000 miles on it an its a 99, but it must have sit around a long time cuz the paint was really rough and alot of the hoses are dry rotted pretty bad. Im at a loss here as to what could be causing the bad gas mileage, the sensors should all be good seeing how it has only 80k on it, im just wondering if a hose is dry rotted somewhere, leaking and sending a bad signal to some sensor. Anyone have any idea lemme know

The oil on the plugs might not be in the cylinders though if it was dripping off them. Was it also on the bottom of your plug wires?? I am guessing that she has the 420A not the 4g63. If your plug tubes are filling up with oil it could cause a misfire... but that would throw a code...
Change all your filters Make sure you aren't burning oil, does it smoke? Fix your valve cover gasket, if its leaking in the plug tubes that is Check your tire pressure, that can make a huge difference.
If I remember right, there was no oil on the wires, just on the plugs. Around the electrode area it was dry, so it was getting spark and igniting. It doesn't smoke, i've driven behind her several times and have never noticed any smoke. The air filter is in good shape, i wanna change the fuel filter next and run some c foam thru the engine. It runs fine, idles down, no surging/choking/stalling. Its just getting chitty mileage. I've told her she needs to lay off the pedal cuz it sounded like the transmission was shifting at high rpms, you know how it is when your in a hurry. But thats just the way the thing is. Yes its a 420A. I would expect the 4cyl eclipse to get more like around 320-340 miles to a tank. It wont be back for another few days yet, so I have some time to figure this stuff out.

This is just an idea, but im wondering if its not the engine, but the transmission. It has an aftermarket car alarm that works when it wants to, an it did have a pain in the ass cd player that didnt work right, so someone messed around with that car sometime. Im wondering if they could have spliced into a wire, say maybe the brake light, and maybe causing the torque converter to not lock up. Cuz the engine runs great, and new plugs, wires an o2 sensor, it should be doing better than it was.
