A little bit ago i had alternator issues, took it out, had it rebuilt put it back in, about 8 months later, but with little driving during that time i started having problems again with it. I replaced my battery because it couldn't hold a charge, but i was still having troubles starting sometimes, and the electrical cutting out for a split second while driving. I had taken the alternator out again and took it into the place and they tested it and said it was fine. Put it back in, it was doing fine, even drove the car on a six hour drive. A month and a half later, again with little driving since, i was driving and the drive belt broke. I think I may have put it on too tight the last time I took the alternator off. I replaced the belt, but the battery light came on again today, and the battery hasn't been charging too well. I check under the hood after driving for about 5 minutes and there was a little smoke that looked to be coming from the belt. I had noticed that as the belt is running there looks like a little section of the belt that might be mishapen or something, but its not too bad. I'm thinking it might not be tight enough, which would be why the alternator isn't working right. So basically, is there any special steps i need to keep in mind when replacing that belt? Do i need to apply any belt dressings? How do i know if its tight enough? It's a V6 ES 96 Avenger, and its green if that makes any difference
