What Causes This
« on: December 24, 2005, 04:00:55 PM »

Ok so this has been going on for awhile now and I can't figure it out. Sometimes whenever I am driving around my cars RPM's will jump from say 2 to 4. I don't know why it does that or what is causing it so I figured that I would post something and maybe someone had the same similar problem.

It only down shifts when I gas it if I am at an almost complete stop. But for example: I can be going 40 miles an hour and then all of a sudden the rpms will jump up but the speed will stay the same. The speed doesn't increase whenever the rpms jump up.

is it a quick rpm jump and then does it fall back to 2k? or does it jump from 2k to 4k and stay there?
if it stays at 4k it is just downshifting.
if it jumps from 2 to 4 and back to 2k it may be an early sign the tranny is wearing. my car has been doing that for the last year but i'm still not sure if it's the torque converter locking/unlocking. either way the best thing to do is a tranny flush if you haven't had one in a while.

Its jumping to 4k then back to 2k. Is the tranny flush something that I can do or do I need to take it somewhere to have it done?

Sounds like your trans is slipping....thats usually the case when you have high rpms but your not going anywhere. Drive slow and get it looked at before it gets worse. Trans flush my help but it can also make things worse if its been a long time since the last one. Use ATF+3 7176 fluid. You can do this yourself but i think its better off you take it to a trans shop and get it done.
