Power steering problems!
« on: December 21, 2005, 08:15:46 PM »

Lately my power steering has been making a loud moaning sound, and it has gotten to the point where it does it even when I'm not turning.  Today I checked my power steering fluid to see how it was doing, and it was almost at minimum, and I had just filled it up about 3 weeks ago.  Could it be a problem with the pump, or is the reservoir just leaking?  Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck man.  I've done almost everything to these cars, Engine swap, tranny swap, rebuilds.  But the power steering stumps me.  I can't find a leak, I've pressure tested the system, and still nothing.  But I lose fluid too.  It might be the pump, but I've replaced mine, and it still does it.  So who knows.  If you find something let me know!!  Until then, I just keep filling up.  I can go months without a problem, but there are times when I fill up a couple times a week.

I looked around at it today and it does look like I'm leaking the power steering fluid from one of the hoses.  I've seen liquids that are supposed to stop the leak for power steering fluid, but would it be easier to just get new hoses?

Just out of curiousity, since our cars use transmission fluid and not power steering fluid, would the power steering sealant not work as well as transmission fluid sealant?

Either are CRAP ... They have small particles that blockade any leaks , unfortunately the particles also get in small area's and can cause troubles also they can break loose again and the leak will return ... Just get the RIGHT hose far easier then getting the sealer then having to flush the entire system

Not sure if I'm looking in the wrong place, but I can't seem to find the right hose.  Every auto parts store I've looked at has had only heater and radiator hoses.

You can use a fuel line hose.

i've got the same problem. like darktengu, i can fill it and it last for months, but then the next time i hafta fill it twice a week. don't get it. happened for the last couple of years actually. can't find a leak anywhere.

lately, i've noticed i can pull on my steering wheel and it moves. that's the rack and pinion isn't it? could that be the cause of the power steering leak as well?

I saw on a few websites that these problems could be caused by the power steering rack.

If the rack is taking a crap there should be some metal shavings in the reservoir.  That and the fact that the fluid leaks all over my passenger side rim and it looks like it's leaking from all over the reservoir, but I pressure tested!!  Huh

My Rack is on the way out in style... this AM on my way to work I got my teeth rattled from the vibration... at least I figure its the rack as its very old and just having changed the fluid a few thousand miles ago... it already smell burnt again.

ARGH... this is gonna put me over $10k for the year...  I love my LXi but this is getting to be rediculous... nickles and dimes... and understatement...

I'll let you know what I find... hoepefully i can find used parts this time...

Wish me luck and send donations if ya got em!

Have had cars in the past were the power steering pump would get the moans. I would use a turkey baster and suck out the fluid and add power steering conditioner. But if you have a leak it has to be fixed as not to trash the system by running out of fluid.
