Need help! Reseting cam timing. Pics?
« on: March 27, 2007, 06:42:29 PM »

So I've finally found the notch on my front cam still looking on the back but i'm sure it's there- now I still can't find what exactly they're supposed to line up with on the head? I know they're supposed to be "timing marks" but I don't know what they look like so I don't know what I'm looking for. My cams moved a couple degrees when i cut my timing belt off (had to- see harmonic balancer siezed thread) and with moving them can I move the gear both clockwise and counter-clockwise or can they only be moved one direction? Same thing with the crankshaft sprocket? Also If I can only move it one direction but it's off in the opposite direction by a couple degrees what should I do?

Looks like my cams have moved about 10-12 sprocket notches. I can't for the life of me find these marks! I'm up the creek without a paddle until I figure this out!

Generally, you should only move engine parts in the direction that they are moved when the engine is running.  In this case, that happens to be clockwise.  There are large V-shaped splits in the metal shroud behind the cams.  The bottom of those grooves is your mark.  The cams also have a tendency so want to get away from you (Snapping really hard).  I recommend getting a cam-sprocket adjuster.  They are about 40 bucks at a Napa store.

btw, if its only a few degrees, you can cheat and move it against the grain.

take the plugs out if you already haven't. will help you turn the crank and you can check that cylinder #1 is at top dead center if you need to.

Right, stick a dowel rod in there and watch it move.
