Having troubles with a604 transmission
« on: January 19, 2007, 03:18:46 PM »

I have a 1991 Plymouth Grd. Voyager. I bought this three yrs ago and this ran perfect. Last yr. I had the fluid changed at a rapid lube because the fluid looked and smelled burnt. I started having problems with a weird noise when it down shifted, I talk to a dealership, thry told me to change the fluid and the filter because the rapid lube probably used the wrong fluid. I changed it like they told me to and then I started having worse problems. Thats when I started going into limp mode. I was told to change the input and the output sensors and that would correct the problem. Well it didnot help. Then I was told to change the shift solenoid and this brought out of limp mode. Now I am having problems when it is trying to go into 4th gear. 1, 2, 3rd gear shifts beautifully. When going into 4th it acts like it shifts and the it acts like it shifts again this does it between 2 or 3 times before it quits acting like its shifting. Then at 48miles per hour it shudders and evens out at 52. I was told to have the tcm flashed and the dealership said they could not do it because it comes up the wrong make and model for this vehicle. I was told to get another tcm at a junkyard and this would help this problem out. I did get 1991 dodge grd caravan tcm. The problem is still there. can anyone help out and tell me what I need to do? I am about to give up and sell this thing before I destory it!

don't have a good answer for you but i'd try to find a good local transmission shop.  alot of shops are familiar with the a604 transmission. whether your problem is due to having the wrong fluid in it for a while, or the problem is related to shifting into overdrive and torque converter lockup is beyond me.

Well believe it not, I was was told to check the tie rod on my van. The passenger side was bad. I was so excited I had to take it for a spin. Well the shuddering was not as bad. I was told I probably have a bent rim or a bad tire and to rotate the tires. Good news that stop the shuddering. Now I am told to change the the fluid with mopar 7146. Well our dealership here has only vavoline atf4. I can go to the part store and get that for less money. Is there any difference between them? Thank you for all who has responed to my forum.
