Light Dimming
« on: January 16, 2007, 10:44:08 PM »

when I come to a stop I notice that my lights will dim considerably, and my rpm's will drop lower than normal.  Was wondering if this means anything.

My car did the same thing at every stop light. I ended up getting a new battery, which really changed nothing (the battery had a bad cell). The lights still dimmed.

Are you running anything that might draw more current (stereo, amp, etc?)

Also when you say that your rpms drop, what do they drop to?

I do have an amp, but its not hooked up right now.  the Rpm's drop a little, like a fan is kick on or something is drawing, but nothing is drawing that much.  My battery is a couple years old, but still should be ok.  I was just hoping its nothing like a percusor to a alternator going out.

if it's really cold your battery might just need a boost

me too. get a voltmeter and see how much voltage it is putting out at idle. should be around 14 or so. or get it checked at autozone.
it will eventually drain the battery down.

I was going to say turn down your stereo (as a joke).

I agree, check out the alternator.  While you are at it, it probably wouldn't hurt to clean your battery terminals and check all your grounds.

yeah definately clean the terminals... pepsi and a wire brush will do wonders. you can even put vaseline on the terminals once it's clean to prevent more corrosion and promote better electrical flow. just dont use a lot.
