More Cold Weather Probs
« on: December 12, 2005, 08:54:31 AM »

similar to a previous post, my Sebring's transmission is having problems in cold weather.  i'm talking probably 20 degrees and below.

during the first several minutes of driving, the car seems to have problems going into gear.  with the shifter in Drive, I can depress the accelerator and the car acts like it's in Neutral.  The RPM's go up, but i go nowhere!  I get the same effect when I put the shifter in 2 or 1.  After several seconds of nothing, it seems to "catch" and then I start moving.  This happens at maybe the first five stop signs then all is well for the rest of the day.

has anyone else experienced this and should i be worried?  thanks!

your going to loose your transmission most likely, one of the issues with the 604 it has several
small O ring style seals and just like the any material they shrink in cold and as they get
old they shrink and harden,, once your unit gets warmed up they swell and work...Chrysler
#4 oil is a mercron 5 with an addative, smells just like the old trans X and could be as in
the early days of the 604 rebuilding I used dextron 2 and added a pint of trans x that helped
keep the seals soft.. you could get your unit oil flushed and put the #4 mopar oil and
filter back in land it may be helpful..or try a pint not a entire ca of Trans X and depending on
the condition of the seals it could resoften them and get you a few more miles out of
your 604, however  Often when seals get hard thats the beghinning of end
the end...Roger Reynolds.. Roadrage quick change gears...

Yep Clarke, I hate to agree, but this is how my 41TE indicated the torque converter had ripped itself apart and lovingly spread itself throughout the entire tranny!

If your lucky it could simply be dirty filter/fluid, I'd suggest trying that quickly.  Roger sounds quite familiar with our slushbox of a transmission so i venture to guess he is likely correct...

Good luck!
