I stumbled across this forum because my car is driving me bananas.  I read your post on cylinder #4 misfire.  My car is doing the same identical thing.  The rpms scream when I clutch it and when Im just about at a stop it idles down. Its constantly missing at an idle and keeps throwing the same misfire code.  My car is a 97 with a 2.0.  I read that you just changed the #4 injector and the problem was done?   Any help is greatly greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Dan

Hey Dan,

I'm still not really sure whether the injector needed to be replaced or not,  as the problem still persisted until I changed the intake manifold gasket (There was a huge chunk of the gasket missing when I pulled the old one off)

My good friend also had the same problem with his 97 i4 5-speed, and I told him to go straight to the intake manifold gasket and it was fixed.  (There was also a huge chunk of his gasket missing)

They only thing is that Ive replaced this motor.  It has less then 10k on it.  I seriously doubt the intake gasket is the problem.  I mean I guess I could replace it, its just a super pain in the ass to get to that gasket.   Did you have the same symptoms with the engine rpms surging on start up and declutching?  Caus some one else in that old post, posted some Dodge diagnostics stuff which described the symptoms and a list of computer changes that dodge would have to do. I really didnt understand his post.

well, mines actually fine. but, if whoever put your engine together didn't exactly seat all the gaskets right, that can cause a problem and a deterioration of the material. that would be my guess. poor quality gaskets or incorrect installation.

That would be my good friend Nykon that posted the TSB information in the other post, he posted above thanking me for the update.  Your welcome Nykon  Grin

I am not saying my ECU did not need the updates, I am not saying my injectors did not need replacing, I am just saying the problems did not finally stop until I changed my intake manifold gasket.  So like I said when my friend Joe bought his 97 with the same problems I said GO STRAIGHT TO THE GASKET, and it worked.   I know its not an easy task, I did it and my friend Joe did it.  Figure about 2 hours of work.

So.........I am TELLING YOU!!!!  If you are getting a damn P0304, High idle at startup (that takes a while to settle down)  And YES RPM's jumping up when you press in the clutch (and RPM's do not come back down until you are FULLY STOPPED) then it sounds like you have the same problem my friend!!!!

If you are AT ALL doubfult that I am right, get ahold of a vaccum pressure tester you can rent them free at autozone and other car parts stores.   There is a __ psi that is standard in the manual (I can get this for you if you need)      If your car shows anything below the standard PSI then you've got a vaccum leak like I did.

not technically free. you have to put a deposit down that you get back when you return it. In the END it's basically free.

That would make sense.  It would cause a vacuum leak so your computer will compensate by adding more fuel and raising the RPMS.  While you have it off, give your throttle body a good cleaning too.

Well I thought I found an easy fix, started into the intake removal and found a vacuum line had popped off of the cruise control, but unfortunatly it didnt solve anything.   Where would I plug a vacuum gauge into? There are many vacuum lines on this motor.

Well you were deffinitly correct Chris with you diagnosis.  I put a vacuum gauge on there and it was very erratic.  Then I sprayed some carb cleaner around the gasket area with the car running, and it just about shut off.  I pulled the intake off today to find a gasket that looked like it had been in the Sahara desert.  It was all cracked and shifted and pieces missing.  Put on a new gasket and the car runs like a million bucks.  Thanks for all your help.
