car stalls
« on: December 27, 2006, 01:15:53 AM »

I have a 1996 avenger with the 4 cylinder engine.  Car will run for about 20 minutes then stalls whether idling or while driving.  When you let it sit for approximately 5 to 10 minutes the car will start back up.  Replaced the coil pack thinking that when it gets warms it stalls the car.  The only code that shows up is code 43.  When you rev the car and the idle drops back down it stalls like it can't catch itself.  When the car stalls you hear the fuel pump run for 1-2 seconds.  Is there anything else that will make the car stall when it gets warm?  Any information would be appreciated.

First off, welcome to ASOG!

If you haven't found it already, code 43 is for multiple cylinder misfires.

A couple of the members here have had trouble similar to this. I would suggest checking your fuel pump relay. Mine went bad, and the same thing happened. It was 2 dollars, and the problem was fixed.

Good luck, and keep us updated.

Code 43 also includes the coil, sure it's good? Might try the fuel filter, but I have yet to hear of one go bad. Maybe your the first  Undecided. Have you tried leaving the fuel pressure gauge on till it warms up and dies on you? Is it losing pressure then? If not, I'm leaning towards the coil. Any auto store around that have a DRB (diagnostic readout box) that you could get a read off of? Would be able to narrow it down with a diagnostic trouble code.

The crank sensor is located behind the alternator and above your oil filter, check the connection. Make sure it is attached properly and that all terminals are straight, tight and free of corrosion. If you want to test it, you will need an oscilloscope. the output voltage of a properly operating CPS switches fromhigh (5.0 volts) to low (0.3 volts). By connecting an oscilloscope to the sensor output circuit, you can view the square wave pattern produced by the voltage swing.

That sounds impressive, but thank Chiltons, I just type it.  Hang in there. Let us know how it goes and we'll go from there.
