Tranny go BOOM!
« on: December 06, 2006, 04:59:10 AM »

ok it was really like B-B-B-B-B-Boom get slower each time.

i'm at Outback. Just got done with my birthday. Go out. Crank it. (i keep it in neutral unless its a hill) push the clutch in, put it in first and it starts to vibrate violently until it dies. i try to shift out into neutral but the stick won't pull back and i've got a clutch pedal the wimpiest nerd in the world could push in. to the floor nooooooo resistance.

2 hours earlier.

I have to make a left turn to get to the interstate. A major wreck on I-75 causes me to have to deal with 14 18 Wheelers in a row. right after the 14th, i have an opening. i take it and i think i dropped the clutch TOO hard (oops) i'm making a lefthand turn a my tires are spinning all the way to the tune of 6000 rpm. then i shift into second. no resistance until the pedal is 4/5 to the floor. once i'm on the on ramp (175 yard distance between the turn i made and the interstate) third is the same way. fourth and fifth are like normal. when i get off at my exit, all the gears are acting normal.

after i got it cranked, it didn't do it again immediately but when i got to the first redlight, it crapped out on me again. the same violent jerking death. couldn't shift to neutral. lights red so i can't give it gas.

once i got onto the freeway i went a few exits down. i wasn't sure if they had gotten the wreck cleared up yet, so i went ahead and got off and parked at a gas station. some mercedes had parked close to my passenger side (still in their lane) so i decide to be nice and repark (basically double) since it's late at night i don't have to worry about alot of customers. i realized how close the car was once i had stopped rolling. so i pull it out of gear and go for reverse only to find i CAN'T go in reverse. so at this point i just let it roll back a little and call my stepdad to see if he knows what might be wrong.
he says to check the cylinder fluid level so i do and it's practically empty. how convenient that i'm at a convience store..... ha efing ha. i fill it up with brake fluid and it all ends up on the ground within 2 minutes. even when it had some in the reservoir, it still wouldn't shift. i had my fiance try to shift it while i watched the fluid level but neither one of us could get it to work.

so it sits there until i can tow it to my mechanic.

which is only 15 miles away....... if that.

any ideas guys? dynamite is NOT an option..... yet.

One possible problem is that you blew a seal in your clutch pedal hydralic cylinder.  I only say this because the V8 project car had the same issue when I first got it, the only difference was the seal was blown in such a way that the fluid was spilling into the car and running under the carpet.  When I pulled the carpet out I found at least a quart of fuild under it and a paper towel wadded up around the rod that runs through the firewal. Paper towels won't fix it so don't even think about it!  Smiley  Luckly I never intended on using it since I converted the car to a automatic with a manual valve body.  I did however remove the clutch pedal and don't recall it being very difficult.

sounds like the pressure plate on the clutch failed.. the release fork moved too far, and then the piston popped out of the clutch cylinder..  only reason clutch fluid would be on the ground.. unless the clutch line broke..

but..  from the description.. sounds like your clutch is 100% fried/broke.

the guy before me bought it so i just got another one and it seems to be doing good for now. I had my mechanic install it so i know it's been done right. it withstood me doing a burnout all the way up to 7000 rpm in first as i left work tonight.
