it looks like 2nd and 3rd cylinders' spark plugs got carbon build up... any idea why that could be? 1st and 4th look fine IMO

think about this:

you paid 6.99 per plug (roughly)

6.99x4= 27.96

add tax (here 7%)

1.07 x 27.96 = 29.9172

thats 29.72 you have to spend EVERY year or so.

if you don't have the PermaTorque Felpro gasket or equivalent (it's $20ish and isn't a one time torque down gasket) you get to add in the gasket (we'll say 10ish)
anti-sieze (optional but recommended) 1.50
replacement wires cuz you popped the end out of the boot $30 before the lifetime warranty (if available)
lets tally that shall we

   30.00
     1.00
    10.70
  +27.96
----------
    69.46
x    1.07
----------
    73.32

that's how much your paying almost each year. not to mention the gas mileage you would be losing. (about every gasoline car i've seen CAN get 270ish to the tank)

NGK copper =   1.98 x 4=   7.92/30K
NGK platinum=  2.98 x 4= 11.92/90K
hmm. ALOT less expensive in the long run

Ceramic off the tip will break off and fall into your cylinder, so... you will have a little peice of ceramic bouncing around causing pits and damage to the piston head and cylinder walls.

Is this an extremely common/known problem? Could the ceramic not fall off of any plug and do the same thing? Or is this something that is typically associated with Bosch plugs? I mean, if I were to contact the manufactor about it—after building some evidence to back my argument—would I be able to get something out of it? Until now, I've never heard anyone complain about these plugs. Of course, spark plugs aren't usually the topic at hand during most of my conversations.

Also, are any of the symptoms I posted earlier something to look out for? I'd just like to know what I may need to keep an eye/ear out for since I haven't had any noticeable problems with them thus far.

I know how ya feel on this, Ivan. I hate it when I read something like this and the whole time I'm thinking; dangit, I've already got that or done that to my car! Ah well, you live, you learn. Won't be done again. Better to learn—and be able to correct in the future—and be thought a fool, than to not learn and be known an ignoramus.

I have seen it first hand with Bosch, no others.

I have heard from other mechanics of it happening with Bosch, no others.

that and a few retail customers that brought in the bad plug and wanted me to pay for damages to their motor.  I was happy to forward them on to Bosch.

What are the benefits of new spark plugs, besides not having bits of ceramic bouncing about in your cylinders? More effective fuel burning, right?

due to the unfortunate lack of complete efficiency though, no loss would be next to impossible...so, more fuel burnt=less power lost
