Timing off?
« on: December 13, 2006, 02:05:24 PM »

So last night I start hearing a whining sound from the engine with a little smoke.  I finally mad pulled in to a gas station for light and discovered that a plastic guard had spun around the backside on the one of the timing belt pulleys and is now resting on the belt.  The belt had been cutting groves into it and making excrement smoke.

So I reached in and pulled the piece off.  After that, she wouldn't start.

Do you think this is just a case of the timing belt being thrown off?

the belt may have broke when you tried to restart it. if the belt looked that bad i woudln't try to restart it.
was it a piece of the timing belt cover that spun around? cause unless the cover was broke, i don't remember any piece that could spin around like that.

I am assuming that your engine is a member of the 6G7x family.  These engines are based on an interference design....which means if the timing is of AT ALL...the pistons and valves will collide.  That can get really expensive!  I would check and double check the timing belt.  It its still intact, your timings okay, if its not....pray.  Could you post some more specifics about it?

Yes if it was the cover that contact the belt it probably burnt up and could have damaged the belt/timing ...
Pics are BEST to help diagnose over the net ...
