Help me diagnose/impress cute co-worker's dad's 300
« on: November 23, 2006, 05:05:20 AM »

This hot girl I work with came in today and said she bottomed out her dad's 300 in a construction zone and now it makes a tick and has vibration.

I looked at it after work and there was valve lash coming from both banks at idle but it was as quiet as in mine so I dismissed it. She let me take it around the lot tho and there was definaetly vibration that got worse as RPM's increased. Exhaust note sounded a little flat as well. My only experience with this platform was a Charger R/T and this only has the 2.7L so i know there's differences, but that Hemi drove so smooth you couldn't feel it...this you definaetly can.

My guess was she hit bottom so hard it skipped a tooth on the cam gears. Sound right to you?

P.S. The engine cradle or radiator mount (whatever is the thick metal bar underneath the car directly in front of the oil pan/filter) was scratched and bent to excrement just to give you an idea of how hard the impact was.

bottomed out-vibration-tick. they all tie together. find the lowest part of the car (i have no idea, just speculating through critical and logical explanation). find what hit the road. whatever that could have been connected to  rigidly (w/o damping i.e. rubber to absorb vibration), could be damaged. if something is severely out of place..it is very likely this could be the problem vibrations get worse as engine speed increases. i would guess exhaust, but unless the damage is after the muffler, im presuming you would hear a pretty loud car which does not seem to be the case. check the exhaust mounts.

the lowest part is that cradle or whatever that thing I tried to explain above. I have no knowledge of those cars, plus I'm self-taught and admitedly don't know a lot. We'll see what really happened next time I see her at work I guess.

well im pretty sure the radiator mount moved something else when it bent. i couldnt think of any of the parts of which its connected to..but the engine mounts may be damaged.

Her dad took it in and turns out she bent the sub-frame up against the motor.  She can't remember what else they said was wrong, but it's bad.
