Enclosures: Sealed vs Ported/Vented

Sealed enclosures are nice because they usually take up less space than ported enclosures, and have better acoustical qualities than most ported enclosures in vehicles. But a very well aligned ported enclosure can sound just as good, if not better than a sealed alignment. A lot of bad sounding ported subs are bad alignments in the first place. They are usually very high Q (Qts) drivers shoved in enclosures that are too small and tuned too high or too low. Enclosures that are tuned too high will sound shallow from the lack of deep bass. Enclosures tuned too low will sound rumbly due to sub sonics 'rumbling around'. Enclosures that are too small will either have a very bad peak, or a very bad dip in the response due to mis-alignment. And finally, drivers with too high a Qts will sound tubby because their electrical "suspension" isn't up to the task of maintaining a good enough restoring force without the aid of good air spring (which sealed enclosures have).

Sealed advantages and disadvantages

Easy to design and build.
Very forgiving of errors in design and construction.
High power handling but one of the least efficient enclosure designs.
Tight bass with excellent transient response, maximum driver excursion at resonant frequency and higher distortion levels.
Gentle roll-off after F3 @ -12 dB/octave.
Driver retains enclosure damping below Fc.
Unless driver is specially designed for a small optimum sealed enclosure, the optimum alignment may require a large box.

Ported advantages and disadvantages

Fairly easy to design and build, may take some time to tune properly.
Enclosure must be fairly precise to attain desired performance.
More efficient than sealed, need less amplifier to get higher SPL's.
Good transient response with optimum alignments, minimal driver excursion at resonant frequency and reduced distortion.
F3 can be set much lower than a sealed enclosure, but roll-off after F3 is @ -24 dB/octave.
Driver loses enclosure damping below Fb, and may lose control with very low frequencies.
Unless driver is specially designed for a small optimum ported enclosure, the optimum alignment may require a very large box.

dB......... The unit of measure of sound level. Based on a logarithmic scale. Typically, a 3 dB increase in sound level corresponds to a doubling of amplification power. An increase of +10 dB is a doubling of perceived loudness.
 
Sound Pressure Level. A measurement of the level of sound energy usually measured in decibels (dB) SPL (sound pressure level) can be measured in dB. 0 dB represents the threashold of normal human hearing, 130 dB represents the threshold for pain, 140 dB causes permanent hearing damage, and 150 dB can cause instant deafness.

Quick Reference: This table shows the amount of current flow which will cause a 1/2 volt drop in a 15 foot run of cable. Many people consider 1/2 volt to be the maximum acceptable voltage loss in a system's main power wire. The 'total amp power' is the total maximum unclipped RMS power output‡ of all of the amplifiers combined. It is based on 60% efficiency (for class AB amplifiers) and a battery voltage of 13.8 volts. This calculator will tell you the required alternator rating for your vehicle at peak usage. It may not be possible to meet these specs with a single alternator or even necessary to. Many other factors come into play such as driving and listening styles. The Parthenon.  The ultimate loudspeaker driver.  More excursion, more output, higher power handling than any driver on the face of the earth.  A true 82mm one way linear stroke (nearly 6.5 inches peak to peak linear), and a radiating surface greater than three 18" subwoofers allows the Parthenon to generate the highest SPL levels ever achieved by a single driver (more output than eighteen high end 18" drivers)
