or ....hopefully ur exhaust doesnt have a leak, but that can easily be fixed. i would check the entire system for rust, then if nothing, its probably ur muffler..its not muffling. so get something w/ a reputable name as nykon suggested.

ok, i need to re-open as i now have a solution. since this only happens at a certain rpm, it has to do with the vibrations of ur system. there is such a thing as a natural frequency where an object at this frequency will vibrate to infinity in theory. due to external damping factors such as the rest of ur car and the exhaust system, it doesnt go that high, but is made noticeable. what have you done to the car? you may have a bolt not in right/all the way. a pipe may have become loose. have someone rev it while u check under to see where the vibration is coming from. it should be somewhere along the pipe.

or maybe, just maybe... and I know this is a really really long shot here and all... he has a... no sorry it can't be that... well... yeah... why not... a crap mufflerhow would a shaft going out cause his car to sound like a farty honda?? What shaft would go out?? Have you had any exhaust work done?? If you have, check and see if the resonators are still in your exhaust. When I had my flowmaster I took out the resonators and between 3500 - 4500 RPM it sounded really raspy and kinda tinny (like a honda) so I put one back in and then it was deep and gutteral nice sounding.

i want the deep sound like my V6 was but i know that alot of what causes that is the cylinder count. HOWEVER, my 92 Ford Probe GL sounded more intimidating after an aftermarket muffler was put on it and it wasn't annoying.
the muffler thats on it was on before i got it. I believe it's an ebay muffler (one of those industrial size soup cans with a pipe welded on both ends). So as soon as i get the funds then i WILL be upgrading the exhaust system. The reason i think it's an ebay muffler is because the prev. owner got the headers off ebay.
*sigh*

There we go. Ebay muffler = CRAP!
Also your intake will have something to do with your exhaust tone.

it only happens in gear, so the drive shaft becomes active and thats when the exhaust starts going crazy. of course it could still be the muffler b/c it could create the right frequency to cause an amplitude frequency spike of the drive shaft...imo.
