Is it possible for badly corroded battery terminal posts to cause the car to sporattically sputter and/or shut off?
My posts are to the point of starting to corrode the wires connected to them, and I'm just wondering if that can possibly be giving them a bad connection. I'm also wondering if that bad connection could be correlated with causing the car to behave oddly—such as shutting off and/or sputtering from time to time. Just curious, as this is a new problem to me that I've not yet had a chance to rectify, and I'm wondering as to weather it could be contributing to my car having said symptoms. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Yes.  A bad battery connection can cause a problem.  I don't know about sputtering, but I had an Accord with corrosion on the posts and it would die from time to time.  Cleaned the battery up and didn't have a problem until it got all gunked up.  Then I replaced it and didn't have any more problems.

cool, thanks. I was kinda thinking it may have something to do with causing problems, but just wanted to have some verification.
Thanks, Darktengu

One of my buddy's car had a corroded wire, which was being eaten by battery acid. It actually got to the point where the car wouldnt even start anymore, and the wires had to be replaced.

I have bought those felt washers that go around battery post..... and they DO work. Try it.

yes they do, my moms car died and i took a look at it and the terminals were corroded to hell. i cleaned it up and got her some of those felt pads with some greese you can get with them, and the corrosion has not returned yet.

yeah, i'm hoping to resolve this issue before it gets to that point. cuz that has got to be a pain in the a-double-s.

Well, I've cleaned up everything on the battery and it's surrounding area. Apparently at some point my battery has over flowed and got acid everywhere. At least that's what appears to have happened. It took me all afternoon the other Saturday to clean everything up. Had to remove the metal plate the battery sits on to clean it and everything under it. Not to mention repaint it, along with the brackets that hold the battery in place. Oh yeah, the acid had gotten so bad that it ate away one of the nuts that help fasten the positive wires in place (there was only half of it left). Also, the felt pads I placed under the terminals before were completely dissolved  Shocked! I think it may be in some of the wires but I cut away as much as I could and sprayed that acid cleaner on the ends to try and get rid of as much as I could. Replaced the terminals with some of those "corrosion resistant" ones and sprayed everything down with that battery protector spray (the red stuff). It's been a coupla weeks now, and everything seems to be hunky-dory thus far. I'll continue to monitor it, but I think—hope—my corrosion problems are resolved… for now. Big ups to all who has help me with this situation!

Really? I've never heard of those. Sounds like they would, but I don't recall seeing any of 'em either. Thanks for the heads up, I'll try to remember to keep a look out for some next time I'm in Advance Auto.
