Optimum exhaust set-up.....
« on: October 28, 2006, 01:09:29 AM »

Anybody have any idea what would be the optimum exhaust set-up for a N/A '96 model 6G73 Avenger? I now have a Bosal cat-back on 2.5" pipes, a 2.5" Catco cat, and an Exile Racing Predator downpipe.

jee.  I run stock manifolds(cus i am poor) 2 1/4 through a cherry bomb glass pack and a magnaflow muffler.  And btw what are the gains with the aftermarket headers on our cars.  The stock ones seem pretty nice and free flowing.

idk about all headers...

but my car was the test car for the original XERD headers and it put out gains like 28whp or something like that.

28WHP?Huh WAIT..U mean....2.8 right? well..actually u could be right. i mean, i looked at the headers in my v6 and i must say flow is extremely reduced. i mean, the gases go together like a t-bone crash. w/ a bit of math application, the exact loss can be calculated, and from my guess, since this is directly related to four of the six cylinders, the speed of these are greatly reduced to less than half of the original speed since the direction is forced. this has an effect on the speed of the nex two cylinders where slow moving gases impede fast moving gases at an angle causing a further total speed reduction halfway between the speeds of the two w/ a total speed reduction of about 40% (at least). with headers, there is virtually no...no scratch that. headers eliminate these speed losses if designed properly. so exhaust speed is increased and when combined w/ a well designed and structured exhaust, provides significant power increases/low end torque/high end power and very good increase throughout the rpm band.

yes it made 28whp increase and even more tq... something like that...  my car was cali spec though. It would still give you atleast a 15-20whp on a fed spec car

Then, if that is the case, we need someone who can reproduce those same style headers for us. I think they would be worth maybe $400-600. They would be required to mount up to a provided downpipe or other aftermarket downpipe (like the Exile Racing Predator downpipe)

easier said then done. people have been looking for headers for years here..seriously. unfortunately the venge/bring is just not a big enough market for anyone besides crooks like xerd. ert was damn good to us but seemed to have dropped off the map as of late.
best bet is to look for used headers..they are out there.

dude, this is way more than a bit of math. pulsed exhaust flow through merging pipes involves some serious math and fluids calculations. you've been pulling way too many numbers out of your ass. don't pull that engineering crap to impress anyone here. i've been through the mechanical engineering program and i'm pretty confident saying you're in way over your head. think about the firing order on this '4 stroke' engine, remember the precats, look at the entire rpm range cuase it ain't a lawnmower.  there is no way you can look at the stock exhaust and estimate the velocity losses, let alone the power losses.

yea its really just about equal length... larger collectors where the pipes merge together... You cant calculate it like that.

the best mods for the a/s V6 is:

3.0 swap
headers
ICON

in that order

I hear a lot of machinist & exhaust "experts" talk the talk, but can they walk the walk? I would pay to have them custom made if that's the benifit of them. If they can make them once before, why can't they re-create them & be special ordered? If I had access to the tools and proper machinery, I would try to do it myself.

if i had one, i would make replicas...well..actually..if i had a stock one i would make aftermarkets myself. ppl are just narrowminded at times and dont think about what can actually be done.
