Engine noises??? [Neons...general problems of mine]
« on: October 27, 2006, 07:14:17 PM »

Hey all. This is my first post...seeing as how I just bought my car a week ago today...lol I own a 99 Avenger with 130k(km-or about 81k miles). I have 3 very odd noises coming from the car. The first, and most annoying, is a rattle or grinding noise coming from...somewhere on the car. At first it sounded like it was coming from the bottom, but now i'm conviced it's coming from the front end, possibly passenger's side. It's only noticable between 2000 and 2500 rpms. Actually, more specifically, between 2250 and 2500, and, when the car is first started after sitting there for hours. I was told that it might be the heat shield on the catalytic converter, but i'm not conviced.

Second noise...i'm not even sure how to describe. I think you can only really hear it inside the car. It could be considered a rattle coming from the rear drivers side when hitting bumps. Not even big pot holes...the tinyest bump sometimes make it go off. This noise goes, and comes back randomly. It gets really  annoying between that and the first one...lol

The 3rd...only occurs when travelling faster than 120 kph. To be honest, I don't even remember what it sounds like (because I haven't been on the highway at all for the last few days), but I know it's coming from the engine compartment. I know I haven't provided a lot of info, but if someone could lead me in the first direction, i'd be eternally grateful.

Rob

Oh, also. My driver's side door light switch (the little black rubber encased button) is jammed. Anyone have any suggestions to un-stick it?

Ugh...forgot to mention. I own the V6 2.5L model.

what you should do is do a clean sweep, go through ur car and make sure everything is tight. it sounds like u have something loose for each of those problems. my guess is the previous owner had done some repairs but half-a**ed it. go ahead and rattle each part by hand until u find whatever is loose. should turn up.

Hmm...that's very possible. I did do some tinkering in the engine compartment, and only really found one thing that could have been it, but...it wasn't. Then again, I didn't really go through every part. I'm thinking that the first rattle could be something on the bottom of the engine. How do you suggest I get to it? I'm thinking about calling up the owner of the dealer where I bought the car from, and have his mechanic take a look at it...lol It'd be much easier to bring it back, and have him put it up on the lift, instead of me poking around...lol

Sorry for the double post, but I have another little issue with the car...lol The car came with neon lights installed...but they aren't working...lol The switch light comes on (so i'm assuming that they're getting the power), but the lights themselves aren't coming on. What could it be? All 3 of the tubes aren't coming on, so could it be a fuse or the connetion from the tubes to the switch? thoughts?...lol

Depending on who installed them it could be a bunch of reasons.  I'd put my money on a junk switch.  Taking power in but not sending it back out.  I found when I do electronics that a lot of people buy cheapo neons, and even cheaper Fleet Farm switches.  The switches burn out.  Test the switch with a multimeter.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

well there is a lemon law which is basically a warranty for the first sixty days, so u can go ahead and have the mechanic take a look. as for the neons, could be fuse. Its also possibly a a junk switch as darktengu said. the switch may work, but only if set up in a way that is different than what it is specified as. such as the ignition line being the power line, the power line being the ground etc. if the neons were not installed by the owner, then it may be a fuse, as the person who installed them would know its an easy fix and they would ave fixed it. if they were, then the switch is faulty. like before...all parts that came w/ the car should be under lemon law warranty...i believe this is not just in NY which is where I am.

Yea. We have a similar law here...but I believe it's the "Consumer Protection Law", which is only good for the first 30 days of the purchase. So long as nothing major is wrong with the car, or something that I didn't already know about (such as the rattles), then it's the dealers responsibility to fix it.

I should know about that law...I owned a 97 Talon for 3 days...It had a head gasket leak and I was forced to give it back to the dealer cuz he refused to pay for all the repairs needed.. Cry I loved that car...lol

But at any rate. I'll see if I can get my hands on a multimeter to check the switch. I was told by the dealer (who's a friend of a friend of my fathers) that the neons DO work...just not always...So far, i've owned the car a week, and they haven't worked once...lol But then again...The second I got the car home, I accidently popped off the panel that the switch was connected to, and the switch light itself didn't work for a few days, until I fixed it.

lol yea. The only thing that really sold me on this car was the interior. It's pretty much 100% the same as my Talon was. The exterior...close enough...lol

K, well a little bit of an update on the third noise. It accually starts at 100 kph (60 mph). It almost sounds like the engine is struggling. It's a high pitch wine almost, definitly not a rattle or ping. It's only present when going faster than 100 kph WITH my foot on the accelerator. If I take my foot off the gas, then the noise stops, untill I hit the gas again. Any thoughts?

Clean your TB.  It could be air flowing over some gunk that creates a whine like whistle.

Sorry, this is my first car...so, i'm not too familiar with these abbreviations. TB=Timing belt?...lol

And you are taking into account, that the whine is only apparent when my foot is on the gas, when saying that it's the air-flow? (Just making sure, so I don't have to ask in my next post...lol)
