I have a 96 Avenger 4 cylinder 5 speed with 145000 miles and a tired engine that smokes and makes a lot of funny noises. I would like to swap it out with one with fewer miles. What are my options?
Can I easily swap to the 2.5L? What about bigger like 3.0 or 3.5L? Do I need to swap the trans as well?
Thanks

Silly boy, there are reasons people want the 420a over the V6 model. There are lots of availible mods for this platform, rebuild the block and turbo. And to answer your question, yes you can swap those motors in but its not worth it

You can go turbo from places like hahn or even go to a 2.4. I *think* the block is 2.4, but the heads will remain the same. (I should remember this as Dave and Schoeby did a swap on his car in our old barn) From what I remember there are clearance issues? Look for members Schoeby or Alain95i4 as both of them have done it in the avengers. You can look to 2gnt for people who have done it to their eclipse cars. There is also a guy on this forum that is doing a V8 swap, but that might be more than you want to get into. Turbo or 2.4 will be lots less work.
Hey, Jeff B, I suggest you put in a 4G63, their are even more mods out there than the 420. You will have to swap the tranny though, but I understand you can squeeze more power out of one of them.
yah.. except for the fact you have re fabricate/move engine mounts, and get the lateral geometry correct, then do the exact same for the tranny.. then u might as well make it an AWD...
redefined rides already does this swap...its not easy.. but if uve gor 6k.. u can get a 4g63 boosted and built AWD venge.... i got a ride in the first one they built, shits fast. vey fast... but a modded GSX wil still take you simpply b/c of the weight differnce. GL if u do the swap by your self = suicide..
keep your motor, rebuild and turbo it. i only have 100,000 miles on my 95 bring and no motor or tranny probs but come spring she will be as good as new... wait, BETTER than new.... with a huge turbo. i think thats the best way to go but thats just me, to each their own

yeah im rebuilding right now, got a couple trix up my sleeve...gotta try some new things. come on ppl open ur minds...think. there are tons of things u can do to improve power...well..at least thats what i think..i believe i come up w/ another one evryday.

well then we need to talk and start sharin ideas cause im all about the most power i can get and im not stoppin till im in the 20,000 horsepower range or dead, and i have a feeling i know which is gonna happen first!
haha, ya kno u wouldnt be able to touch the pedal anymore...heheh. arite, as sooon as I do my trials, I will let u know what is up. I will be working on my lil trials in december during winter break. If its worthwhile..we can do the same to urs since u live close enough.

comments like this make me think that one is not ready for a turbo quite yet. I guess it is easy to just slap one on and call it good, however there is a lot that you should know before putting one on to get the best efficiency out of it. Keep in mind a "huge turbo" may give you lots of boost but you will also have more turbo lag. Just a thought.

i dont know if this is corect but i think theres a thing called a misfireing system for turbocharged cars. im not exactly sure how it works but i do know that its sopposed to reduce or near eliminate turbolag. i dont know i saw it somewhere and thought it was interesting. ill google it tonight but if anyone knows about it then let me know

thats also why there was mention in there about the rebuilding part. im not gon slap a big a** turbo on ANY car if ima hurt the motor and only be able to drive the car for a day or two before its in the garage again. i know what im doing and i have been ready for a turbo since i discovered what the were bout ten years ago. yes i was a late bloomer.
