Hi! Have scoured the web for any answers to my problem, but to no avail. Sorry if this has been covered before. Have seen similar problems, but none exactly like mine.
I own a 2001 Sebring coupe. The other day, I went into a store and then when I came back out, the car wouldn't start. The key goes in fine, I can turn it to ignition, all the interior lights come on bright, the headlights are fine and bright, the radio works, all electronics seem to work fine. I have a new battery and have ruled out battery/alternator problems. I don't get a repeated "clicking" sound when I turn the key that would suggest a bad starter. My guess is that the malfunction is probably in some switch that wont let me start the car for safety reasons, ie. gearshift lever, brake button. I've jiggled the gearshift lever, played with the release button on the gearshift knob, tried to start it in neutral, adjusted the steering column, tapped the brake pedal, and nothing lets me start the car. I have checked the fuses inside and they are all good. I've taken the cover off the steering wheel column and have observed nothing that looks suspect. Also, and this may be a big hint to someone who has had the same problem......my steering wheel does not lock when I take the key out. I have had the car only for a short while and I don't remember it ever locking. The security system seems to work fine as well.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much.
EW
