Please help my 95!
« on: October 13, 2006, 11:52:48 PM »

I have a 95 w/ the V6. I'm not sure what the  automatic tranny designation is. It's my wifes' and she's about to give up on it but I don't want to so please give me some advice.
When the engine is cold it hasn't been wanting to shift into gear from park. I told her to let it warm up since it has just started getting real cold here again. That seemed to work for a short while until the other day when she had been driving for about 15 minutes and she said it was like the tranny went into neutral and just rolled. I think she was going slow like in a parking lot. She had to pull over and restart the engine for it to go away. This makes me think it's electronic.
The tranny has always leaked a bit from inside the bell housing but the level on the stick doesn't go down very fast and is controllable so I never tried to fix it. I think I changed the fluid and filter about three or four years ago. Someone told her to change the fluid and add some stuff to the fluid. I don't like adding "stuff". I like fixing it.
The engine has also been stumbling when you come to a stop and idle which makes me wonder it that's related.
Is there some kind of shift kit available to beef up these wonderful Dodge trannys???
Thanks for any input

Correction the car was warmed up -she came to a stop- went to go and the engine just raced like the car was in neutral-she says she can get the car to go by racing the engine hard and then it clucks into gear-this time she restarted the engine twice to get it going.

check fluid for level, color and smell. if it's burnt smelling or dark colored it needs to be changed. make sure you have only atf+3 or +4 in it. any other fluid can damage the tranny and cause it to slip.
get the transmission codes scanned, if there are any. you're right, really shouldn't use any additives besides mopar's anti-foaming additive.
there is a shift kit available from transgo..http://www.northernautoparts.com/ProductModelDetail.cfm?ProductModelId=2489, but it wouldn't pay to get it installed til you get the tranny working properly.

Thanks, I'm gonna start with a flush and fill today and see where that gets me. How hard is it to replace that pump seal in the bell housing?

Well it's done. Shifting seems better now.
Unfortunately, I didn't actually flush the tranny like I thought I was. I found two lines going up to a little cooler and opened them up to find tf coming out so I assumed these were tranny lines. As I was 'flushing' all sorts of orangy ketchup like fluid came out then it got red again so I stopped. After hooking evrything up again I checked the tf level again and it was full which I thought was a bit odd since I drained some of it out when I flushed.
As I was backing out something felt odd so I stopped and check my levels again. When I got back in I realized the power steering wasn't working and then the pump started making a racket.
So I flushed my power steering fluid out! Looked like it needed it I guess. lol
But I think in a few months of running I'll have another whack at flushing the tranny. I looked again and found them right where they should be. lol

thanks for all the help.

I would get the fluid fushed on a flush machine or replace the fluid & tranny filter. While you're at it make sure you have no leaks.

Sorry, I did change the fluid. Guess I'm not being clear enough. But thanks anyways, so far so good.
