96 Sebring Coupe Transmission Problem

The car has a problem that when I shift into (R) or (D), it shift w/ a hard thump. When shifted onto (D) it gets stuck on 1st gear and won't shift over. Now I can't drive it anywhere. It's a 2.5 w/ auto trans. Fluid level is good. Anyone knows anything about this?

mine did the same thing, out of the blue. wouldnt shift stalled if i shifted into reverse. turns out my venom400 was sending crap signals to the tps and maf sensors, putting it into limp mode. chances are there's a sensor problem putting it into limp mode, OR , you have a bad torque sensor, torque converter , or tranny. any leaks? are you sure it's in first gear and not in limp mode (stuck in 2nd gear).?

I had a seal replaced inside the tranny about 2 years ago. It has no leaks at this point. Yes, it's stuck on 1st. I watch the rpm and by feel of the car and it doesn't shift.

your trany is in 2nd, it thumps because its in limp in , this max -s the line pressure and
causes the harse engagement... I always advise dropping pans first and cking fluid
condition for meta.l or burning ,, Bad input and output sencors usually let you get
rolling for a second or two before bumping into limp in so cking fluid and possibility
of trany proublem or solinoid PK...rreynold@nemonet.com

It's actually stuck on 1st. If I go 30MPH it revs to 3500RPM and on w/ more speed (no shift feel whatsoever/RPM never drops). It got stuck on 2ND only once. That time I could go 40MPH @ about 2000/2500 RPM. I dropped the pan to replace fluid/filter and everything looked normal, just old fluid. Still has problems. One thing I know though, is that if the car sits for about 2 days without running, tranny would shift fine until I restart the car or put in Reverse then Drive. What could this be?? I'm about to replace the output sensor to see if that helps. Any other ideas?

If your opting to replace the input or output sensors. Buy them from the Dealer! This is a must, the Aftermarket parts dealers stock junk sensors. They won't last long if they even work at all. (experienced this myself... you don't want your car kicking into limp mode at 100 mph.... )

I am thinking your solenoid pack is f'ed up.

But first check your fluid by droping the pan, also look for any debris in the pan as Roger said.

Well after replacing the Input and Output sensors, the tranny is back to normal.
