96 Sebring doesn't like to shift out of 2nd Gear
« on: July 11, 2006, 06:45:26 PM »

I have recently had my transmission fluid and filter changed.  I also had the output sensor replaced about two months ago.  Then about a week ago I put a 6 pass cooler on the transmission.  Now all of a sudden it doesn't like to shift out of second gear.  It is hot out so I doubt it is that the transmission needs to heat up.  I notice the problem mainly when I start the car for the first time each morning.  I have to stop on the side of the road, turn the car off, then back on and then keep going.  Usually if I do that it will then shift into third.  I have had it once where it shifted into third, then I had t slow down so it downshifted and would not upshift again when I tried accelerating again.  I wasn't sure if this could have been caused by not getting the output sensor from the dealership like i have read about before on these forums.  Any ideas please let me know.

Thank you,
Joe

Sounds like "limp mode," but you are able to get it to shift out of 2nd if you restart the car. Is it possible that the tranny cooler is somehow reducing pressure, causing the TCM to go into "limp mode?"

not really sure.  I don't see why it would affect the preasure much.  I am planning on bringing it to a transmission shop by my house once I get a free day.  I checked my fluid and its still in the good area so that is about all I have really looked at personally.  Is there any fairly easy way to fix it myself if it is going into limp mode?

As far as I know, if it is in limp mode the dealer will have to take care of it. I hope it all works out for ya!

Thanks it has actually been running fine for me lately.  Not really sure why it does it only some of the time.  I have been letting it warm up a little in the morning I suppose that might be helping it.  The only thing that worries me about having to let it warm up is the winter in michigan getting so cold.  I am not sure how long I will have to let it warm up to run correctly.

Just a quick idea to run past you guys.  Could it possibly be that the cooler lowered the pressure slightly along with the fact that I only have the fluid filled so that when it is hot it is at the middle of the good area on the dip stick?  I guess I am asking if I fill the tranny fluid so that it is at the top of the good area could that help with the pressure slightly or even possibly be affecting it?

Thanks i am kind of tired so sorry if that sounds a little confusing.

not sure, in theory  Wink, the aux cooler should raise the pressure since it is another slight restriction in the line. it sound more like the trans temp sensor is not working right. i just don't remember if there is an actual trans temp sensor or if it is calculated using other values. you are saying once the trans warms up it shifts ok?

Its not necesarily when it warms up.  Actually I had it put on a computer today and it is still getting output sensor errors even though I have had it replaced already so they think its the wiring or a relay.  We will see what they say about it.

Ok here is an update and again another question for anyone with transmission knowledge.  According to the transmission place I went to they had previously replaced the selenoid pack not the output sensor which is why I am still getting errors on the sensor.  Now they replaced the output sensor and luckily did it for free.

My new problem... They said that they are getting an error with the low reverse and that it implies internal problems with the transmission.  I was curious if anyone had run into this problem in the past or has any idea how long my transmission might still work before I will have to worry about either getting a new car or having the transmission rebuilt.

Thanks,
Joe

I don't know if this will help but here's what my 95 Sebring Transmission saga goes:

1.started to go into limp mode
2.flushed fluid at dealer (worked fine for a while)
3.reflushed fluid at lube shop
4.chrysler quotes $2k rebuild (new pump, etc)
5.local shop replaces a leaking seal
6.rebuild done for $1k (everything new - solenoid, sensors,etc)
7.same problem 6 months later
8.someone else says "hydraulic modulator"? or TCM is problem
9.codes come up 42 - 2 4 solenoid circuit error
10.Chrysler says needs new solenoid pack
11.Test drive to occur later today
12. Question - do I have the fluid flushed again?  Most likely its not ATF+3

Are you basically saying try to sell the car with the tranny going or possibly have the fluid re-flushed to make sure its ATF+3?  I'm not really sure what to do here I might just end up driving it until it craps out on me and then sell it for around 2k as "needs a tranny" so someone else can deal with putting a new transmission in it.  Or, do I chance it, get the tranny rebuilt and see how long it makes it?  I know these are all really opinion questions but I am not realy sure what to do I have only had the car for 4 months and have already put more money into it than the car is worth.
