Engine stalls while driving
« on: June 13, 2006, 06:56:20 AM »

Hey all,

I have a 96 Avenger with V6.  Lately, it has been stalling on me while i'm driving, usually doing 120 km/hr on the highway.  The engine will just cut out for no apparent reason, rpm's will drop and no pedal response, but the lights seem to stay on.  Then just as fast as it cut out, it will start back up and I can keep driving (I suspect due to tranny still in drive gear?).  Sometimes it will happen while idling,  in that case i have to crank her over again.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Plug wires?  Also, i get a bunch of cel codes popping up after it happens, including crank position sensor and cam position sensor, but i figure the stall made the computer lose track of the position?  Besides that it runs great if anyone wants to buy it! lol... need a mini-van for real...

9 times out of 10 that is a bad crankshaft position sensor. the ecu will not fire the plugs unless there is a crankshaft position signal. the sensor is probably bad.

Thanks Downer,

Could it be the crank position sensor even if it only happens occasionally?  I could drive it for a couple of days without it cutting out.  But if it's an easy fix (and cheap) I could try it.  Any idea on how much one of those sensors cost?

rockauto.com has the sensor for as high as $75.79 and as low as $52.79.

So today I decided to replace the crank sensor, I called around to see who has one in stock and I find that there is an upper and a lower?  My Haynes manual did not specify this.  Question, is there a way of finding out which one is faulty?
I don't want to replace both since one is $100/CN and the other $129/CN.

I see a product description for an upper sensor, but nothing for a lower. I checked 2 different sites (www.rockauto.com and www.mydodgeparts.com).

I can't quite explain why its called and upper sensor if there is no lower one.

4807083 is the chrysler part number for the cps. search around with that, or call the dealer and see if that part number has been superceded.
i've bought parts here before..http://www.makeitmopar.com/

Ok so I swapped the sensor, it was surprisingly easy to do.  In fact, it was so simple that when the wife asked to help, i let her do it all!  Anyways, it's now been two days and no stalls or engine lights.

Thanks downer and TSXtraitorboy!

i'm having the same problem.  keep an eye on it for a week or so and let me know what happens.  if it dont happen again cps here i come!.  I'm still going to check the relay as venge suggested.  Did your check engine light come on?  Mine doesnt, but i havnt had a puter hooked to it cause it doesnt light up.  Also sometimes hwen you crank it over does it crank realy strong but just doesnt start?  Then maybe a 2-5 mins it'll crank over perfecT?

That is the same symptom from when my fuel pump relay went out. Its a 5 dollar easy fix too!

It hasn't stalled out on me since i changed the sensor, and yes i was getting a check engine light.  When i did the key dance it would read the code for crank and cam sensors.  That code has not come back since the new sensor was installed.  I still have an O2 sensor to swap so i am still getting code 21 i just don't know which.

I never had a problem with turning over the engine...
