I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem: My paint is starting to oxidize (black car-turning white and coming off) on the roof, trunk and it's starting to go down the sides now too. I ran into a lady yesterday with the exact same car-doing the exact same thing. (98 Avenger) It looks really bad, and I am not sure what to do about it. If 2 cars are doing this...was there some sort of recall we missed-or what can be done to fix it?
Thank you-I am new here, and appreciate any and all help or suggestions. Diane
It is just the paint fading, its not the first time a member has had that problem. i also have it. so did another member. Options are repainting or wet fine sanding (1000). Just remove the top layer (the clear coat) this what is coming off. When the luster is gone, that's when you know all of it is removed, but be careful not to go too deep. When the area looks about even, you could apply two -three layers of clear coat to bring back the shine. It wont be as dark as the rest of the car, but looks better than the faded color. It wont be noticeable unless you stare pretty good. Good luck.
TECHNICALLYb it's a clearcoat problem ...It develops pinholes then water gets in underneath, then the sun hits the water causing it to raise more clearcoat up ,that causes the paint to fade The recall is a total JOKE ...Unless it was under 3 years and 36K they really didn't do much .... They offered me $300 off of a $3800 repaint

I just went to get gas, and under those bright lights I noticed the 'white' stuff is spreading even further, but where it had been and has since moved on is a dull dark color. With my car being black, is this the bare bottom, or is there still paint left?
Well..paint usually peels, the clear coat is what fades. the dull color may just be due to overexposure to sunlight. So unless u noticed peeling, chances are, you're not even close to the primer..I believe the clear coat would have to fade, then the paint peels, then you're down to primer all in that order. Like I said, I dont think you've gone through all these stages, so sun overexposure may well be your culprit.
My old 96 Avenger did that under warrenty on the passenger side door handle. It was replaced back then, tho there was no recall on it at the time, only a TSB

Sounds like your clear coat has "flown the coupe" (pun intended) and what you are now seeing is raw base coat paint. Only real fix is repaint/clear again. Probably not what you wanted to hear.
