Well ASD relays are under the hood on the drivers just above the headlight. Or right next the air filter and that is with my 1996 dodge avenger ES model.  Actually, the car was not running before it started having problems with not cranking. I did a radiator flush and new thermostat replacement on the car and went a couple of days without starting the car but it was starting fine before then. I need the main belt replaced because it is started to make a noise and I discover that the bolt that tightens the belt was broken. That is why it is hard to trust other people working on your car. I bought another car over the weekend but I still need to get my avenger fixed. Just replaced the plugs in front to see if they could get a spark but, you all are correct to check the crank senor and ASD relays. I was still having the problem with fan not coming on until you removed one of the ASD relays from the fuse box.  Will check back to see if you guys have more ideas.

the relays we are talking about are next to the brake fluid reservoir on the firewall. there are three bosch style relays. they aren't near the headlights. i know which ones you are looking at..in the fuse box near the headlight, but those aren't the ones. i have a pic somewhere if you need it.

no. 1 at 100,000 miles this car needs new Platinum plugs (these buggers are like $25 each & I live in a small town) I had my 100,000 mile done at the same time a trans had to be put in. I spend close to $2000 on the trans & tune up w/sparks.. & yes there are relays & fuses in black box next to air filter. I had my car since it rolled off the line & never once needed relays. This car is now totaled & I am debating on parting it but I don't know where or how to get most stuff out of it. call my mechanic & ask which route to take or what he thinks he is awesome!! i'm still having the same problem with my car....we started with the fuel filter, did the plug/wires thing, had it put on diagnostics TWICE, replaced the electric part of the ignition in the steering column, then 2 weeks ago, put a new distributor on the thing. It has started to go dead while slowing down, or at a stop. I have really begun to be fearful of driving my much beloved 'venger, and have even begun to seiously consider trading it in. This has been an on going on again off again problem for about 8 or 9 months now. oh, also, I have noticed the rpms ranging from normal driving range, (2.0 to 2.5) to about 1 or 1.5 while going at highway speeds. If ANYONE can suggest something I haven't done, or knows what the problem is, PLEASE, PLEASE help us. I'm almost desparate....I'm afraid my car is going to get me killed, as I live in a very busy city where nobody can drive....(isn't that everywhere??? LOL) Huh

Molly with your problem I"d check the alternator, if it's dying while slowing down.  Check the connections and have the thing tested.

Yesterday, I was alomost home...just another street to go, and while going at 35 mph. with no warning, no cough, hiccup, or anything else...it just died. Just died!!!! Angry
I just was so pissed that I started to walk home and leave the stupid thing there for the city to come and haul away. It wouldn't have hurt my feelings at all....at the moment>>> I'm going to get an ASD Relay today, if this doesn't work, the next plan is the ECM. After that, I'll return the distributor I just paid through the nose for, and either start over, or buy something else. Undecided I'll let ya'll know if this works, but I'm not holding my breath. I've begun to be afraid of my car. I'm afraid it will get me, at the very least, hurt, and the very worst, killed. Something has DEFINATELY GOT to be done!!!!!!!!!!!!

;DHello...Just thought I would let ya'll know that we replaced the ASD relay, and the problem seems to be resolved. It's been 2 glorious weeks of having my baby back the way she is supposed to be. Thanks for all of your help and suggestions. I attribute the repair of my car to all of you who replied to this and other messages. Cool
