Getting half my fuel mileage
« on: November 21, 2005, 07:33:03 PM »

on my '99 Sebring with 75K miles.  I haven't noticed a loss in engine performance, but for whatever reason I'm only getting about 9-11 miles to the gallon right now.  The only clue I have to go on is a slight burning smell from the engine after seriously stepping on the throttle.  With the cost of fuel right now, I'll be grateful for any responses!

I'd start with a tune up first. Plugs, wires cap and rotor. My fuel mileage was poo and I replaced my two upstream o2 sensors and have fixed my problem.

No check engine light.  It isn't a problem where I've been noticing a drop-off over time, it just began within my last fill up.  I'll start with your two suggestions, thanks!

Do you smell gas or a burning smell?  What kind of a smell was it?

Could be a bad tank of gas if thats the case.

Do your neighbors own a siphoning kit?

lol, maybe, but she's garaged under lock and key so I think I'm safe on that one.

This one I don't like.  I got a new oil leak that appears the be the source of the smell.  I'll take care of that whenever I can.

Yes I wondered that right off the bat as well, but I've never experienced these symptoms before, think this is actually a viable source of the problem?  I might just use it up today and start with a fresh tank before doing anything.

After Changing the Alternator and Sparkplugs on a 96 2.5 Bring I have noticed a huge dif in gas usage.  I am not sure if it's a vac. leak or a MAP sensor.  I did however notice that one of the bolts that hold the intake man on the engine was shorter then the other one.

I guess what I am asking is could it be a vac. leak in the manifold?

Thanks in advance for the reply

Hey thanks for the info.  Another quick question is did you use any silycone on the bolts that hold the intake down.  When taking the bolts out the 1st time I did noticed some crusties on the bolts

Thanks in advance
