How much will it cost to have a tie rod replaced???? Help?
« on: May 17, 2006, 11:26:14 PM »

I have a 1997 Sebring LXi with 177,000 miles on it.  It's been a good car for me and I still use it as my daily driver.
While backing out of my parking spot today as I was leaving work for the day I heard a poping sound and all of a sudden I thought the transmission had locked up... the car didn't want to move. I turned the steering wheel left and right but something didn't seem right. I put the car in park, jumped out and discovered the left-front wheel pointing to the right but the right-front wheel was pointing to the left!!!!!  Oh crap.  I'm half out of the parking spot,  a dark cloud was rolling in and I'm 12 miles from home.
I called AAA and had it towed.
I had a couple of people suggest it is a tie rod or tie rod end...
How much should this cost (parts & labor).  I towed it to an indie shop just down the street from my condo.

Also, if it is a tie rod, do you have them replace both of these or will I be safe in justreplacing one.

Thanks...  I'm not ready to part with my old fiend but I'm hoping this is not the start of repeated trips to the mechanic!!

what probably happened was the ball joint on the lower lateral control arm failed. there has been a recall on them for years now. way too common of a problem for us.

just take a look underneath it and see if the lower control arms are still connected to the steering knuckle. if it's not, start calling dealers and bitching.

If it is a tie rod eng a shop will try to charge you up to 300.00 for the repair and alignment

but anyone with a little car knowledge can repair it in 15 minutes and the part is under 30 dollars but you will still need an alignment

It's a long process but you can do the alignment yourself if you need to.  I've done it on a mx3 ... you drive it... get a feel for it then yank the wheel off pop off the tie rod end and adjust (err guess, usually one or 2 turns at a time ... use 2 if it feels way out) and reassemble and go for another drive ... the tool only costs 25 bucks and it's quick enough to do if ur good u'll only need 3 adjustments and you can drive it as well as any dealership.  But you need a little more expertise for that ... don't attempt it if you aren't car savy... this is just the back yard mechanic way of doin it.

this should be under recall . Mine was. AND if anything else broke due to the failure of this part it is also covered. If they say it isnt they're lying. I had to threaten chrysler that I'd call headquarters because they wanted to charge me for a new axle, which the failure of the ball joint caused.
