Oil pan coming off today what else should I check?
« on: May 03, 2006, 12:52:23 PM »

Oil pan is all nasty. So I picked up a new gasket and I plan to clean her up and repaint since it's kinda rusty too.

Just wondering if there is anything I should be checking out while I have the pan off for good measure?
The oil pressure light has been acting kinda bitchy lately too, and it's got me a little worried.

I also picked up a valve cover gasket set since I'm getting oil in the spark plug bores.
Could someone let me know the specs for adjusting valves on a 1995? Might as well check em while I'm in there! She has over 100.000 miles on the clicker!

On a side note. How involved is giving the top end a freshening? Just thinking about a winter project for next year.

Top end is pretty easy and shouldn't take you more than a day of actual work.  Valves shouldn't be adjusted at all.  This is an interference engine and you don't want your valves down early.  You have hydraulic adjusters so everything is automatic.  I haven't tried to test an oil pump yet, but you might want to take a look at at it while the pan is off.

Hopefully you won't find any metal shavings.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

Thanks for the heads up. I just got the pan off, lotta stuff crammed under it to get out first. Oil pan looks clean inside. I'm gonna see if the pump strainer pulls off and give that a spray down.
Does anyone suggest the use of a gasket sealant or should I just use the cork gasket? It looks to me like there wasn't any gasket originally and a orange(copper?) sealant was used.

Man these things rust so easy. Like reclaimed metal, all flakey. Hard to tell now if the pan was actually leaking since there's a little wetnessrunning up the passenger backside of the motor but it could be off the jack shaft spinning right behind the pan, too i guess. The pan was really on there good too.
Almost tempted to pop the tranny off to replace the output seal while I'm in here, but it's our only insured vehicle besides the cycles. And I still have to repair the tranny lines that are leaking and the flex couplings in the exhaust, and oh yeah the valve cover gaskets. UGH!

Thanx again

Good update!!  I'd do everything I could if I were you, with the tranny.  The A604 is problematic.
