break upgrade on my 95
« on: May 02, 2006, 04:04:20 PM »

Hey guys, i'm new to the forum but have had my avenger for a few months now.  the breaks suck bad so I want to put disks on the back, and upgrade the fronts.

I read on some site that you could use any 95-99 non turbo eclipse breaks for front and back... anyone done this?  Given the choices what are the best? like are 99 ones better or cheaper than 95 ones or are they the exact same?  Anyone know the diameter of the rotors?

I seen somewhere too that you could use mitsu 3000GT breaks with a bracket to get bigger diameter without ordering the $550 big break upgrade.  The stock fronts i think are 9.1" and I want at least 10" breaks ... 12" would be nice but I don't want to spend $1500 to get 13" breaks... my car is just a street machine, not a pure bred racer.  I think I seen the eclipse ones were 10.1" witch would be perfect.  I need slotted or X-drilled rotors too.

Are the eclipse calipers 2 piston stock?  If not are 2 piston ones available?  again the 4 pistons ones are not required for my usage.  The avenger ones I believe are only 1 piston... anyone verify?

Any help at all thanks.

I read on some site that you could use any 95-99 non turbo eclipse breaks for front and back... anyone done this? YES Given the choices what are the best? The GSX or 3000gt are both twin pistonlike are 99 ones better or cheaper than 95 ones or are they the exact same? Same 95/99 Anyone know the diameter of the rotors? felt like posting this because lots of people have been asking about it recently, so I want to make it easier to access when someone asks for it.

I did this mod almost a year ago, and if you have problems with your stock rotors warping than this would be the best mod to look into. You can find parts at a dealer or autoparts store, you can even find some of the parts at a junkyard although I wouldn't recommend rotors/calipers/pads from junk yards because they may not work as well as the should, and there's no guarantee that they're in perfect working condition. I got all the parts for about $320 brand new, and $90 of that was refundable. If you choose to do it yourself, here's what you need (off of a 3000GT base/SL, Stealth, Eclipse GST/X, Talon TSi...and I believe 92+ Diamante will work but I cannot be certain on that because it hasn't been done yet):

- 2 calipers
- 2 rotors (10.1" compared to our stock 9.1")
- 2 caliper brackets
- 4 brake lines (2 on each side)
- 2 brake line connectors that connect the 2 brake lines on each side
- 4 brake pads (2 on each side)
- brake fluid (for refilling and bleeding the brakes afterwards)

There you have it...everything will bolt right up to your car. You will need 15" rims or larger to fit them, meaning if you have 14" rims it won't work because these calipers/rotors are much larger. PLEASE PLEASE make sure you don't get 3000GT VR4 OR Stealth TT brake parts, as you will have quite a bit of trouble fitting them.

As far as the rears are concerned, 3000GT/Stealth/Eclipse/Talon/Diamante all have the same rear brakes as us.

Silverblur and I are about to upgrade the fronts on his Avenger.  We are using 96 stealth parts for it.  I am going to take pictures, document everything and then do a writeup on my website.  If you can wait a couple of weeks, we will have very good detailed instructions including part #'s and the like.  Would probably do it sooner but we are waiting for his rotors to come in.

and I thought the most difficult part of brake upgrades was physically getting the calipers and rotors off...

werd its a very easy thing to do, just a direct swap. No modifications needed.

as for the rears i would not be to worried about them, its not going to give you that better breaking then what the drums do. And after looking at what needs to be done to swap i decided not to. The emergency break cable goes under the car and comes up right under the exhaust.
So in order to remove that you would have to remove part of the exhaust.
