Need help card died on the way to work.
« on: May 01, 2006, 05:28:54 PM »

I have a 1996 avenger es with the 2.5 L.  I was driving to work on saturday and car just died on me. It started acting like it was clogged or running hot. I checked the fuel pump and it was still working and I took the fuel filter off to see if it was clogged. The car was able to crank back up after cooling for a while and I was able to get it back home. I changed the thermostat in it yesterday because I notice that the fluids were being pushed back into the fluid container for adding antifreeze.  Did a test run on it last night and figured this to be the problem but the same thing happended this morning on the way to work. Can someone please help with figuring out this problem.  I love my car but it is putting a big dent in wallet as of late.

well..usually a problem like this has to do with a fluid, so I'd check to make sure mine are all set. I've had my car die and it's only been due to oil in one way or another. Since it starts after cooling, you could check your cooling system. You may be overheating.

WHen the car is cooling down you will have overflow of coolant in your resvoir.  What is your temp gauge reading?  Did you ever use stop leak in your radiator?  When was the last time you had it flushed?

I didn't want to put the stop leak in the radiator because it wasn't leaking. I noticed that hoses are soft and they are leaking a little.  Will do a flush this weekend but I am going to have to checked to be on the safe side. The temperature is showing normal but I know it is running hot.

How can you be sure it's running hot?  I'm guessing you already check you oil level? When was the last time you did an oil change?  Is your CEL on?  Even if it's not do a key dance to see if any codes come up.
