Aftermarket guage problem... sorta...
« on: April 22, 2006, 02:00:09 AM »

Ok, I got me some aftermarket gauge overlays from procarparts and put them on.  This didn't require taking the needles off or anything because of the way they are designed.  I did it on an empty tank so that I wouldn't have to worry about messing up anything.  I put them on and filled my tank and noticed that the the gas gauge only went half way up.  I took it apart again and realized that I needed to trim that overlay so that the needle wouldn't get stuck on it.  I put everything back together and the needle wouldn't move until I got under half a tank.  When I filled up it would only go to half a tank and stop.  I then moved it to full tank with my finger and it won't go below 3/4 tank.  It is like the 2nd 1/4 of my tank is dead or something... any suggestions??

That is why I trimmed it, because the overlay was bowed up, but I will check it out anyway... at this point I just want the thing to work.  I hate having things that don't work.

I tried making my own...it's tough to get them down...usually you have to slightly crease it in the opposite direction. I dont know if it'll work in your case though....but usually it does. I took mine out by the way..got bored.

Does the gauge work fine if you don't have the overlay on?  Then you didn't screw anything up, yet.

My main suggestion is to get someone that can ACTUALLY DO IT!!!   Grin

ok, I took the overlay off and turned my key on and the needle dropped like... well slowly but it is aproximatly where it should be.  I am going to burn off my last 1/4 tank tonight and let the light come on so I know I am on empty and make sure it's right, I guess I have more trimming to do and I will pull up the needle a bit.

Thanks guys, well 'cept DT who had nothing constructive to add to the post.  Tongue
