1  General Category / Questions and problems / Re: Power steering problems! on: February 09, 2006, 11:00:53 PM
My Rack is on the way out in style... this AM on my way to work I got my teeth rattled from the vibration... at least I figure its the rack as its very old and just having changed the fluid a few thousand miles ago... it already smell burnt again.

ARGH... this is gonna put me over $10k for the year...  I love my LXi but this is getting to be rediculous... nickles and dimes... and understatement...

I'll let you know what I find... hoepefully i can find used parts this time...

Wish me luck and send donations if ya got em!

2  General Category / Questions and problems / Re: Tranny sensor? on: February 09, 2006, 10:53:05 PM
OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR  likely cause... sensor is nearly directly under the ECM under the hood... input sensor  is much closer to the block.  Any codes?  Check the wiring before you buy a sensor, mine was wiring!

Good Luck!

Jeff... I have experienced these same symptoms personally in my 99 'Bring.  I suspect your timing belt has skipped at least two teeth.  Have you done your belt yet? if so how long ago and what brand?

I decided one day I'd spend some time on cleaning my engine bay.  Before washing I used a low pressure air gun to rid the nooks and crannies of debris like sand and dirt and the nice mouse nest built under the air intake.  Long story short... chased cam sensor CEL for a month - $600 and lots... I mean LOTS of parts... I gave up and brought it to my local Chrysler store... spent a fortune I did not have!  not recommended... they spent 10 fucking hours  Angry Shocked trying to diagnose this... and the tech had 22 years working drivability with late model Chryslers.

CAUSE:  The sand I was blowing out wound up getting sent down into the timing cover and landed in the cogs on the crank gear... mine jumped 6  Huh, thats SIX  Shocked, teeth!  I got lucky as I believe our 2.5L is an interference engine (this means if the cams are allowed slack Mr. Valve meets Mr. Piston in violent fashion)  My tech said one or two more teeth skipped I'd be looking for my twin turbo 3.0L.

What happens: Note: Our timing is completely controlled by the ECU and is not adjustable by us owners!   Cry while the engine is first started and still cold and in "closed loop", or running on its preprogrammed settings until warm... approx 10 mins), it does not read signals from the engine sensors.  Thus its runs "ok" at first, with a slight bog under throttle and funny whooshing sound, back fires too...  and gets worse... almost like your cat converter has clogged completely.  As it warms, switches to "open loop", reading sensor info which is improper due to the crank and cams out of sync.

BOTTOM LINE!

DO NOT DRIVE IT THIS WAY!  Get it checked by a experienced Chrysler/Mitsu mechanic, PREFERRABLY with 2.5L experience, ASK FOR THE BEST 2.5L your dealer has!!!  Tell them what you've had done and you suspect the timing belt and would like that checked... but nothing more... other info may take them into another direction in troubleshooting and bring huge labor charges..

If it is the belt, make sure to replace tensioner for sure and maybe idler too... only want to do this once!!!  I did not try on my own to do the belt so i cannot comment on degree of difficulty.  Parts should be relatively inexpensive... get the OEM parts, no aftermarket unless specified severe service, but the labor will cost nearly your left testi!!!  So hopefully you know a good grease monkey!

Good luck and please keep us updated...!

Cheesy  Some big numbers!!!  Impressive Athena with 206k.  Certainly we have great products, not to mention taste!

I think it simply boils down to how you take care of your steed.  regular fluid changes... all fluids... trans, brake, steering, coolant/antifreeze.... MOBIL1 ***Not an advertisement*** My compression in the 2.5L has barely dropped 2% since purchased @ 29,000 miles.

I mean excrement, in Europe, similar if not the exact same vehicles, are turning the dials to 400k, 500k and more and i have a theory on why us Americans are happy to see to a mere 200,000.

Assuming that fact everyone knows we are the most wasteful society on the planet, we simply are not diligent on upkeep.  In Europe governments REQUIRE annual physical inspections of vehicles... mostly due to the Autobahn's limitless playground I would think.  I have read and have heard such strictness as if there is any hole in a body panel due to rust, it must be repaired in order to pass.  Mechanical portions do not allow leaks of any kind and regular maintenance is normal.

I'm speaking from what I have read and have been told as I have not personally had the joy of driving on the "wrong side" of the road at 180MPH (actually the Bahn is formatted like our roads)... but with manners... which brings me to another issue I'd like to rant about...

WHY DO PEOPLE INSIST ON DRIVING SLOW OR EVEN CRUISING IN THE LEFT (Fast or passing) LANE???  I love the US, don't get me wrong, but we have some complete numb skulls that do not think before doing anything... SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT!  Please!  Autobahn rule UNO, use of the left lane is reserved for passing ONLY... if an officer witnesses someone cruising in the left lane, NOT OVERTAKING ANOTHER VEHICLE, that someone will likely be stopped and ticketed.  Not only is this obviously dangerous to be slow in the fast lane, but it is simple driver courtesy to us born with lead right feet and enjoy having that lead firmly in the air cleaner for extended periods of time!

Ok, I had to get that out since tonight i nearly drove THROUGH a dumbass drunk lumbering along in the left lane... I close on him so fast I nearly had no time to react... fortunately for them I am VERY good behind the wheel, and happen to drive our very user friendly and forgiving LXi

LONG LIVE THE SEBRINGS!!! oh yeah and the 'Venger's too ;-)

Have a great weekend all!!!  TO THE GARAGE TO TINKER!

Thanks for your replies!  I have located the problem... had the Tranny done at 160k (now @ 183500) and the bastards didn't reinstall the harness into its mount clips!!!   Angry

Clips on Output sensor has broken and caused the wires to chaf nearly bare shorting the circuit... a little electrical tape and elbow grease... good as new... be picky when you choose someone to do the work... it pays off in the end!!!

Slotted rotors are inherantly noisier than stock... and harder on pads... but rid us completely of rotor warp...

try chamferring your pads... grind or file angles on leading and trailing edges of pads it helped mine!
