31  Tech Forums / Transmission Tech / Re: Shifting Problems? on: March 26, 2006, 02:53:10 PM
Ill give you a quick run down on your tranny,,, Most likly your sincronizer is getting worn,
the sincro looks much like a cone clutch without much surface area and made of brass
,, its job is to do just what its called, sicronizeing the two shafts  to the same speed,
allowing the slider to move into place locking the two shafts by outer splines together
and locking its self in place with spring loaded inner locks to hold it in its gear,
When the slider goes bad the transmission will not as my experience  has been, will no
longer hold itself in gear and it will pop out on you..Also if your sincronizer is worn
proubly the outer splines are worn as they have a special shape in order for the
slider to move over and instead of pointed they become rounded or even
flat and this also will cause your issue,, basicly you need to have it taken down
and inspected most likly to solve your issue and you may spend 600 to 1500
depending on what is found. Alot of the old standard racers would remove
cetain amount of the outer splines for speed shifting and even made claims
they could shift the nicknamed Hemi box without no clutch at all , however
my guess is they spent alot of time picking up parts and peices of the track.., Roger  Reynolds .

you can get the rear cover off in the car  so you should be able to get the brackets on
however the ring gear bolts are going to take a big air gun to get loose...Roger Reynolds

Sounds like to me your trany is bleeding to death.. you wont burn the bands, it dont have any
however it has 5 seperate clutch packs and my guess is their allready glazed or toasted..
Get a rebuild  ...Roger Reynolds
34  Tech Forums / Transmission Tech / Re: tranny cooler too cold in winter? on: March 18, 2006, 04:16:05 PM
I cant say Ive ever noticed a large difference in hot or cold  shifts in a healthy transmission,
running it cold wont hurt it, remember heat is your enemy however Im sure warmer thinnner
oil moves a bit easier,, I would  go ahead and put the new chrysler #4 oil and filter  and flush
and the #4 oil has a addative that may resoften your trany seals if they have lost their
softness and help out...l  Roger Reynolds
35  Tech Forums / Transmission Tech / Re: a 604 trans problem on: March 18, 2006, 04:11:01 PM
I wanted to post a second time on your question  as I may have missed a very important
point to you question... If I understood correctly you designed a cooler that only allows
flow of lube oil  after 120 or it flows all the time and only starts to cool after 120
and maybe a electric fan kicks in? Ill pass this on.. you cannot cut off the lub oil
to your transmission , it needs to be lubed just like a engine all the time,, It wont die as fast
as a engine without oil but its a slow death and will not survive . roger
36  Tech Forums / Transmission Tech / Re: Roger Reynolds on: March 18, 2006, 03:56:43 PM
my understanding is all P.Ts have 4 cylinders  and  I havent at this point seen a avenger
with anything other than V 6, IN that so far as I know,, NO deal on swaping a PT manual
to a avenger...Not to mention timing sensor may require you to upgrade to a MSD
6al box and make a crank trigger for your ignition to work... Chrysler corp has made
a few changes on the 604 s  that as I see it , you can rebuild and bullet proof a
604 if you want to spend the bucks,, Of course your rebuild is only as good as
the converter rebuilder but they can be up graded also and little things like
unhooking your coolant sensor for raceing will keep it from lking up during full
throttle...E mail  rreynold@nemonet.com
37  Tech Forums / 6 Cylinder Tech / Re: Performance question on: March 12, 2006, 03:16:09 PM
Hey Ill keep you posted on this project Im doing but Ill pass this on for now,, Im doing some
experimental parts  and we had a guy who added the exzaust , air system and  some kinda
computor change.. Im still in the process of adding a dry shot NOS that Im plumbing up
by shooting to each cylinder individually to equalize the flow,(40 HP) however the preveious
mod was adding a set of quick change gears to the 604 trany and this one item easily
shamed all his add on stuff by itself so when I add the NOS Im suggesting the 3.0
in my Dodge spirit will most likly out perform some of the high dollar turbo systems.
Ill keep you posted ...If you have any questions here is my E mail rreynold@nemonet.coml
38  Tech Forums / 6 Cylinder Tech / Re: QUESTION: Is an engine/trans swap possible? 97' in a 95' on: March 12, 2006, 03:06:29 PM
Transmission has a different  mounting pad in the back and different  harrness for the
prindle switch... Get your tranny fixed or ck out.. If your trans pan isnt full of metal
and clutch materials,, you my try going to Chrysler (NOT AUTO ZONE) and purchase
a new input and output sensor..Roger Reynolds -Hannibal transmission and roadrage 604

call it what you want but at my shop a simple fix  at this time no failures, we simply
run a wire feed weld bead across the pen on each end, havent had a failure yet and
been doing this for years...Of course were in the process of a rebuild so  I dont know
if this can be done in  car safely, possible fire hazzard but unlikley.. Owner of Hannibal

I would put forward that  your  shift character can change and be different due to temp change
alone as thick cold fluid can have a different apply than hot fluid...It may also be different
due to you can have converter lk up in 3  and stay lk up mode during 4 th
shift and this would be different with a non lok up shift into 4th. A slippage between
shifts would not be normal however you should  notice a quick jump of the tack
needle if this is happening  and hear a engine flare , if this happened too often you would
get a gear ratio error and go into limp mode being 2 gear... As far as d to od selection
on normal driveing I highly suggest in town to drop into d selction because you can
get od at 40 mph in some vechicle and then it is constantly shifting back and fourth
along with the converter, however you wont notice gas milage difference in town
but on the high way you would,, As far as the tranny- running hotter in D I doubt,, the
main heat source for a transmission is the torque converter,, thats why most standards
dont have coolers,, the bearing s make some heat but  since the lk up converter came to the scene transmission run much
cooler on the highway.. I feel with the extra rpms d selection creates, it pumps better\
lube oil volume, cooling more oil... and in D you are turning 1 to 1 , in this your not
loading the taper bearings near as bad nor the torring bearing makeing this a much
stronger gear and more durable..OD is 1 in and 1. whatever out ,,, you will burn more
fuel and engine may run a bit hotter but most manafactures recomend pulling selection
into D for towing, I would say its more likly the transmission would run a bit
cooler in reguards to produceing its own heat but it may get more radiant heat
off the engine block and keep it at the same temp.. You should put a trans temp
guage on a let us know the results...Roger Reynolds,, Owner of hannibal transmission

42  Tech Forums / Transmission Tech / Re: a 604 trans problem on: March 02, 2006, 01:26:08 AM
Sorry your so far away or I would ship you out a tranny,, Ill pass this on... If your pulling
a trailer,, drop your slector down to D or 3 in stead of OD selection this will help out..
I have my doubts your cooler is the issue however you need to find a new rebuilder,
we build 604 s and abuse the hell out of them ..Roger Reynolds, owner of Hannibal

43  Tech Forums / Transmission Tech / Re: 95 avenger limp mode on: February 16, 2006, 01:48:53 AM
One item that you always want too keep in mind is their are two types of 604 transmissions,
those that are bad and those that will go bad, you transmission going into fail safe comes
from 3 basic possibilities,, Input or output sensor failure, gear ratio error from clutch slippage,
or converter slippage in  abbility to lk up...solinoid pk failure,,, Since your faceing  a warm
up failsafe instead of cold  failsafe I would suggest getting the input and out put sensor
changed as the are often bad at every 60 thousand and get these at  Dodge not Auto
zone..Provideing your not haveing a internal clutc h  or mechanical failure often Solinoid
packs will fail to connect after the unit is up to operateing temp however it usually takes
much longer than 20 minutes to fully warm up but depending on why the solinoid pak
is loseing it ability to connect,,, solinid s work off a magntic feild  when energized for reasons
Im not going to explain , heat will render them unable to work , Another  possibility  is
you have a clutch pk failing and the cold  oil is able to work and  appply that cluch and
leaks  to much when it warms...I doubt the dextron oil is a big issue,, My shop has built
hundreds of 604 s and often used dextron  2 with zero combacks. I say a good rebuild
trumps the oil..If you can find a  honest transmission shop have you codes cked , let me
know what they are and iIll try let you know RREYNOLD@NENONET.COM

44  Tech Forums / Transmission Tech / Re: Shift Kit for A604 on: January 17, 2006, 01:12:49 AM
Basicly shift kits worked on a simple primiters,, they uped the lline pressure and you could
drill larger holes in seperator allowing  more volume to a clutch pk and block acculators in
their bores or stiffin the accullator springs...as they assume some of some of the oil
volume comeing from the shift valve... The 604 is a different type of automatic in comparrison
to general parts used in most automatics.. It was designed with no bands or sprags in order
to save length and size in order to make it fit where the preveious 3 speed auto would fit
to save staggering costs on changeing assembly line at the auto maker...The onboard computor
for one is going to adjust the shift how it wants , not how you want... you change the line pressure, it will simply lower the amount of oil to the shift, putting it back to the same old shift... I think a person could cause proublems for the 604 by upping line pressure due to
the issue of no sprags that is a big help for transmission of old as it will hold a drum
in one dirrection but allow it to free wheel the other, 604 shifts must be precice to relieve
one clutch pk while appling another without engine flares or tie ups between
shifts,, I dont feel their is any aftermarket shift kit that compliments the 604 at this  time.

45  Tech Forums / Transmission Tech / Re: Output Speed Sensor Malfunction... on: January 02, 2006, 12:30:08 AM
Just make sure you buy a Chrysler Sensor,, I have had several folks by my shop who purchased
a aftermarket sensor from Auto Zone and it  worked for a couple of weeks and went bad..
