Title: 99 Avenger Help!
Post by: Cellfae on February 15, 2006, 05:56:41 PM
Hey there,
I am new to the boards, and I am hoping you can help.

recentely my power steering went out. So we put in some new Power steering fluid since it was low. Once we did that, the car started to make a bad grinding noise on the front left.  I am thinking it could be a shock or a front mount.  on top of that when all this happened I have a belt squeling now too. I just changed all the belts, does anyone have any Ideas as to what could be happening. Also the Cruise control is out too.

The engine is a 2.0 DOHC 4 cylinder w/ 107,000 miles.

In recap---
-No Powersteering
-No cruise control
-New belts
-New Fluid
-possibly pump or front left mount?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

could have a seized pully. that would be my guess.  as for the grinding noise if it sounds like it's comming from the front left wheel well could be a wheel bearing.

a seized pulley would lead to the belt squealing too.  Look at the pulleys make sure they are all moving smoothly.  Find out what belt is squealing and (if the pulleys are all fine) tighten the proper tensioner.  Cruise can be a lot of different things, so that'll be fun to troubleshoot.  ::)  Let us know how it goes!

We did find a pully that was broken, so were replacing that.

The tensioner, we are looking at now, so far we can't see anything wrong with it.

Hopefully the pulley will be the fix then.  Let us know.

I just want my car back, I hate this other car. :( My car is so much more fun!

so, I fixed that problem.

Now its doing the same thing again on the same side.  Its making a really loud squeel as I turn to my right. not so much to the left. It's definetly loud, and very nerve racking.

Is it possible it could be the same thing going out again?

If it's a belt squeal again, maybe you just need to retighten the tensioner.  The belt might have a bit more play in it for the few weeks that it's been on.  I'd just tighten it.  Hopefully your pulley didn't sieze again.

I don't think it is a belt squeel.  I am starting to think It may be the shock that has gone out.  but then again, I could be wrong.  I know the belts and pulley are fine, we checked that today.

The noise just has be very concerned, if you have any idea what else it could be, please let me know.

Jack it up see if it squeals when there is no weight on it.

even with no weight on it, it still sqeaks.

I just don't get it.

Ok, lets get more info...  I am a bit confused...

Is it squeal or a sqeak, I am thinking squeal as a sound a belt would make, a sqeak as a sound that would only be made when you apply weight or pressure to something.
Does it just make the sound when you turn the wheel, accelerate, or does it make it constantly like when it is idling.
Is it a constant noise or is it more like a chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp kinda noise.
Have you checked the alternator tensioner??

ok hopefully that will help us narrow it down some.

It is a squeak. When I move the steering wheel, it sqeaks loudly. It mostly does it when I turn right. the squeak goes away after the car heats up if that makes any sense at all. But even when the car is up in the car it squeaks.

however there is a squeal, but I figured that part out already.

Where is the squeak coming from?  Over by the accessories or down by your wheel assembly?  Or somewhere else?

I want to say the squeak is coming from the wheel assembly, but I am not sure.

possibly your bearing, but that should be more of a grind.....

When my bearing was going out it was making a whining noise at about 45mph and higher but no other time...

So I was going down the highway in the avenger. I hear like something snapped under the car.

I look around, under the car, around the car and whatnot. I see nothing wrong with the car so I start back up and drive to work, I was like a 1/4 away.

So on top of what was wrong with the car, I now have a locked Passenger Front Tire, No brakes.

Any Ideas what the crap happened to my car?

I have tried replacing everything you have mentioned to me. I am at a loss now, driving the old car, that's unreliable and driving an hour to work everyday.

I had to get the avenger towed home, and Monday having it towed to a shop to fix it, because I am screwed, I can't figure it out, and I need my daily driver to be reliable again.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

sounds like the wheel bearing seized up.

possibly your bearing

Less possibly, now I'm almost positive.

yep, or your caliper siezed or something...

so, I took off the wheel and what not, there are two bolts missing, from where the horseshoe part is that hold the breaks.
Going backwards it works, going frontwards it hits the wheel.

Could this possibly be the culprit??

Fix it and it'll answer itself.  Either way you'll have to fix it, so might as well do that before you order a new bearing.

yeah, that is not good, the noise you heard was your caliper bolts bidding you farewell.  Pretty sure that was your problem more than the bearing.

I replaced the bolts, so far, that is appearing to be the problem. I test drove it earlier, and its not making any noises or anything so hopefully thats all it was

sweet deal, much more cost efficient than a new bearing

the final cost of reparing and replacing the bolts.. Nothing! :)

my guess is the last time I got my brakes done, the people didn't tork the bolts. :(
