Title: Car starts when it wants to...
Post by: CMC on March 03, 2008, 05:54:01 PM
This started happen to me when i had the 2.5 in...and now is happening again >:(

Basically i turn the key, and nothing ...

-I can hear the fuel pump running and other relays clicking... the radio, window and everything else works.
-Battery is charged
-I have check the ASD relay and it is fine
-starter is fine, when it starts it has no problems
- tried a different Dist. and still has this problem

Only thing i can think of is:

- i have a remote started installed on i remember the installer saying that it might wear out the iginition switch, is that possible?

-some time i will turn the key back and forth until it starts, but doesnt work anymore

Please advise

Is the starter engaging?  Certain security systems have a Starter Relay and they die out and causes your starter to not engage.

i have a compustar system...the thing is smarter then me.

from what i can tell there is no power to the engine...the starter does nothing.

i have put it into "valet mode" (doing a key dance) because my fob is junk, doesnt respond to the car. by doing this it should disarm my system, right?

Should.....

But even in Valet mode if the relay is burnt out, it can't engage the starter.

Turn the key to the on position, and then "jump" the starter.  If the car starts, then you know that the security system is excrement.

I'm assuming you mean use a screwdriver to touch the poles on the starter?

I'm with you on that one! I got my sebring for a better DD, and I have only been able to drive it 30 miles at the most. I'm thinking about just fixing my truck.

Run a wire from the positive battery terminal to the switch power.

I don't know what color the wire is on the 3.5 but on the 2.0 it's Black/Red

OH also do you have a Multi-Meter?  Before jumping at all, check to see if you have power throughout the starter.  The BIG wire going into it (I'm speaking as though it's the 2.0 since that's what I have) is the main power for it, see if you're getter 12v through there, and then check the switch wire (you'll need someone to turn the key while you're down there testing it.)

Check the wire at the start and see if it is getting power when you turn the key.

The thick wire should have battery voltage all the time.

The smaller wire should ONLY have power when you turn the key all the way forward.

yup its the starter... i put a screw driver between the two terminals and it made a spinning sound. tried the key and it started... must be a dead spot or something ;D

Can our starters be rebuilt?

Usually it costs more to rebuild than you can buy a reman one with a warranty.

We sell a reman unit for $135.95

am worried that i might not get a core from located auto parts store because i had to grind off half of the rim to make it fit against the 3.5 block (namely the oil pan).

yeah, it sounds like the starter has a dead spot.

actually hitting the starter with that tackhammer, may help you in the short-run til you get a new or reman

napa sells remans for pretty cheap, if you have a napa nearby, if you get lucky the'll have one in stock, if not they'll gladly order one for you.

(btw...i really like napa)
