Title: FIXING UP THE AVENGER
Post by: eurocobra on January 22, 2008, 05:18:12 AM
I want to make my Avenger more reliable and solid this spring and summer. It doesn't need a full engine rebuild right now but I will start planning on acquiring some parts or start pricing a longblock assembly. An engine rebuild kit will be cheaper I know but overall price versus time to perform rebuild will help me decide which direction to go. I am not looking for extreme power but an extra 15-25 hp is welcome.

I already have a timing belt replacement kit with idlers etc. I would like to get a water pump and power steering pump now before I actually need it. I also have serpentine belt on-hand (the old one) and a new power steering belt. Does anyone have those part numbers handy? These parts will help keep me on the road.

I may purchase an aftermarket header (manifold) and cold air intake, body kit, and get the avenger painted. Send me some recommendations. Post up some of your under the hood "before and after" pics.

Dayco
5040355 [4 ribbed pulley, 35.5 inch] Alternator
5050510 [5 ribbed pulley, 51.0 inch] Power Steering, AC, and Idler pulley

this should help you a little.

I never bothered taking a before pic but here is one from a few months ago. I just rebuilt the engine and dropped it back in after doing a complete makeover including a fresh paint job of the bay before reinstalling everything. That is a blue pearl. Under certain lighting it is a real dark purple. Normal daylight, it's dark blue.

Good job on the engine. Did you replace the transmission also? That is one clean engine bay. I will get started on mine again later today. I was considering a rebuild but a long block assembly may also be a good idea for me. I will let my favorite body shop piece paint.......these two this week and two more next week until its done. Its a black car so no matching. I am sure they will let me assist.

Transmission is original to the car. All I replaced on it was the input shaft bearing/seal, axle seals, and upgraded the clutch line to a stainless steel braided line.  ;)
