I was reading the only piece of 'credible' literature i had available [Haynes manual] and it said the Vehicle Speed Sensor was on the wheel.

Can anyone confirm this? I know that Daes showed me what it looks like....

... but i need to know where it's located at. The sensor i thought it was looked really nifty when i took it out, but it was the Neutral Safety Switch. lol

Any ideas?

On the four cylinders, that's what it looks like and it's on the tranny.

sigh.

Can anyone point to it on their 4 cyl? or draw a picture of where it's at? I'm lost. lol. I pulled one and it was the NSS, and that was the only one i could see with MAJOR disassembly. I had to take out my battery and remove my CAI to 'comfortably' reach the NSS.

Him I'll take a pictures, since the tranny is the only thing I have left that goes in the engine bay!!

Are you auto? Cuz the 5-spd only has 2 sensors, the speed sensor and reverse light switch.

The speed sensor is right below your shifter cables. Might be easier to get to if you remove the cables.

I was afraid you were going to say something like that. I'm doomed. i'm afraid to mess with the cables and i'm far from having any funds to send it to someone who's experienced enough.

There is a difference in which speed sensors you car talking about.

There is the vehicle speed sensor (in the transmission) and the wheel speed sensors (if you have abs, which are at each wheel).

Sorry big guy, absolutely no ABS.  A Buddy named Shaino!! (ABS ok so it was a lame joke.)  But I do have this picture, that I had to sit and go through almost every damn page of my Chilton for, you better appreciate it!!

The speed sensor on the tranny sends the signal to your gauge cluster.

I appreciate this more than you two know. Those two pictures you took of the transmission, are they supposed to be that small? And the way your tranny is sitting on the ground, it's backwards from what it would look like if i was standing in front of the car right? i stood there with the hood raised going 'no... no... NO... STUPID SPEED SENSOR!! WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?! SCOOBY DOO, WHERE ARE YOU?????" I'm euthanizing that sensor once i find it.

That's the one on the tranny.

Also sorry that in my rush to leave, I didn't pick up my tranny and turn it around!!!!

Taking your cables off of the tranny is no big deal. Just remove the 2 clips with some pliars and remove the pins holding the ends on. The cables come right off.

You should be able to get to it, with just removing the air intake, and the cables.

So it's only that 10mm head bolt that's holding the sensor in right? when i took out the NSS, i had to use an adjustable becasue i didn't have a socket designed for that size.

Yes it's the only thing holding it in.  Oh and buy more tools.

Donate to the "Shiano needs a job fund". THEN tell me to buy more tools. or just simply mail them too me free of charge. I have a shipping address available. lol

Pull the sensor out gently. The gear might pop of the sensor and being in a tough spot to begin with, it could be a little difficult fishing it out of the tranny. And removing/installing the battery support bracket is a pain in the ass. You would be better off to not try removing it.

is that gear a metal or plastic one? I've got pretty steady hands, it's just that i feel i'll be hopped up onto the frame and the engine so that i can reach it properly. lol

It's plastic.  Keep a pair of good long needle noses near by.  That is if you have them.  Ghetto tool king

Now that that's out of the way.

So, Shiano gets up today. Takes a big breath. Moves his car to the shade. Takes out the battery, takes off the CAI, looks at the shift cables and say F you, your staying there, then finds the fabled Speed sensor.

*The clouds depart as a single ray of golden sunshine pierces the tree leaves and illuminates the sensor*

Shiano then proceeds to unhook the sensor. Swearing 5 times. Not once. Not twice. But 5.
Then the pigtail releases and after Shiano removes the ONLY FRICKING BOLT THAT IS HOLDING THE SENSOR IN [like it's supposed to mind you], he proceeds to remove the sensor....

Ahem.. he proceeds to REMOVE the sensor...

WTF?! It's stuck!! WTFing hell?!

Why is the engine/transmission mount on top of the sensor behind the connection? And why does that onnnnnnne little piece of the mount look broken where it looks like a bolt should be?

Clean is the first word that comes to mind on what mine should look like. lol. but then again, you dont' have my oil leak. Looks like i need a new mount as well. YAY!! MORE MONEY TO SPEND!! lol. Oh well. Which mount is that technically? Trans or Engine? I'm starting to wonder if that mount is the reason why it's not working. lol. Thank you Daes. You've been very instrumental in this year long [i know i'm lazy] diagnosis.

Technically you only have one engine mount and the other three are transmission mounts. You don't need the actual mount, you just need the bracket that attaches to the mount.

There's a difference in these brackets between manual transmission and automatic. Make sure you get one for the manual.  This is a dealership only part unless your lucky and can find a good used one.

And yes, that very well could be why the sensor isn't operating correctly. It looks like it's jammed in there pretty good. lol

lol. yeah. it'd rock back and forth slightly, but wouldn't pull up.

Mine was stuck under the mount to.  But I was a man about it and didn't pout.  I just removed the mount for a bit.  No crying.  Only a bit of smashing.   ;)

I'm not a mechanic remember? lol. We had to look at YOUR transmission when it was on your garage floor to find my speed sensor.

Oh, and i'm doubly convinced it's THAT speed sensor now. Before, when i'd go around a right hand curve, if my speed was enough, it would move the needle up to 20 mph at the most [depending on how fast i really am going in the curve]. Now, it just sits there since i've disconnected/reconnected it. and the fact that the mount DOESN'T look like it's connected by ALL of it's bolts since one of them is broken, yeah, that's not good.
