Title: Ghetto installs....Phone cord.
Post by: Ch3rry on January 02, 2006, 03:16:15 AM
So while i was getting the motor work done i asked tony to look at my radio cuz it wasnt working. Blown fuse...no biggie. He replaced the fuse and still nothin. So he started checking the wiring to the speakers. Omg. They were wired with phone cord. Started replacing it with speaker wire and found my sunroof switch shoved under the dash. Also wired with phone cord.  :o

I now have sound but if i bump the dash hard enough my sunroof starts to open.  >:(

Anyone else have ghetto install stories?

I've pretty much seen it all ... from fuses wrapped in tinfoil to fuses replaced by bolts with heads cut off ...
We had one einstein make splices by forcing paperclips thru the wire .... that would have worked if he had taped them up afterward  :o I've had people use extension cords for amp power wires by running them under the car wrapping them around the axles  ::)

my fiance has told me many stories when he was an installer.  Like someone grounding their amp to the trunk lid.  running amp wires under the car, Someone using the cardboard box the sub came in for the actual sub box.

I used to see that at CC all the fricking time.  They'd get a head unit installed, and have a "friend" install an amp and use a damn stinger to put in a ground wire.  Then they'd bring it back to us, and say we did it.  Glad the computer always says what they paid for.

How about a kid that tried hooking up an amp but didn't know what the REM was on the amp, but he figured out that if you hook up the 12+ to it, the amp worked.  But couldn't figure out why his battery was drained overnight.

Or A guy that is actually one of the best install guys I know, and does lots of custom work, but when he first started, he did a Semi truck.  He fitted it with a CD Player, Amp for speakers and speakers.  But he wrapped the wires around the steering column to keep them from hanging down.  When the trucker left the lot, and started up the road, ALL of his electronics came ripping through his dash, No more CB, no more Radio, no more nothing.  The ignition even went out.  I wasn't working there at the time, but it was still funny.

those are great! lol!

a friend of mine shaved his door handles on his blazer and never installed any door poppers. he just used a shoe string that he tied to the inside handle and dropped it out the bottom of the door so he could just grab the shoe string and tug on it to open the door. he said it was his cutom door handle kit powered by nike! lol!!! :)

i have a broken coilover we cut in half holding up both my headlights right now. lol!!! its sitting right behind the lights keeping them from falling and pointing down on the ground since the posts to hold em up are broken. god i need some new lights! lol!  ;D

i don't know how i forgot about the ghetto install my fiance did last night on seats in my venge! i ran across some nice comfy leather seats from an 03 or 04 tiburon and he put them in last night. of course they don't bolt in so he had to drill new holes for them and install long bolts to set them in. they were crooked on one side so he put sockets in there holding them up as if they were on small legs on one side. kinda hard to explain. i'll hafta snap a picture and show you guys. :)

This thread is hilarious.  :D

Im guilty of ghetto fabricating too. Lol. I have a tub full of a few hundred bolts from my sebring. The spots where all those once were are now bound by zip ties and jb weld. My worst was prolly when i used pantyhose for an air filter. Actually im sure thats not the worst, ill have to think about this.

My godmother is the queen of "creative engineering".  I can only think of two off hand.... one being we couldn't get the trailer lights on the horse trailer to work so we direct wired the only thing we had on hand, a million candle powered spotlight, into her Jeeps trailer wiring.  Covered it over with a brake lense from the trailer and we had a brake light.  I don't think anyone behind us had a problem knowing we were braking...lol.  She also had the lights go on her truck once while we were at an auction one night.  She followed me home with flashlights taped to her hood.  Every outing with her is quite the adventure...lol.

Not so much a ghetto install as just plain ghetto.  I had a big Chevy conversion van with a power 350 in it.  But I beat the piss out of it.  And after a year, the ignition was so messed up, any time you moved the steering wheel to the left, the ignition disengaged and the van would start to die.  You'd have to wiggle the Steering wheel and get it to lock back into place on the column or the van would shut down.  It was messed up doing 80 on the highway, go to switch into the left lane and lose all power.

Back in high School a Buddy and me were installing a Bazooka tube in his 93 Mustang LX and the tube came with the straps and stuff to hold it down.  Well, we installed it and it sounded great!  Come to find out about a month later he got a flat tire, went to get the spare out and we had put 2 scres in his New Spare!  LOL

Nice, I don't know why but that reminded me of the first time I put speakers in.  I thought the speakers in the Olds I had were better than the ones in the Pulsar I had.  So I swapped them.  The Olds had 6x9s and the Pulsar had 5 1/4.  It looked like crap and sounded like it too!

My MAP sensor is secured to the intake plenum with zip ties....everyone know that when a screw falls, it rolls into oblivion.

I have engineered some crazy crap in my days too. In college, I had a lawnmower that would not stay running. I took and old sock and stuffed it in the air intake. Then I kept hosing it down with starting fluid, and she ran like a champ  ;D. The damn thing also didnt have a cut-off switch for the motor, so I had to grab the spark plug wire and jerk it off the plug. NOT FUN!. After using the sock, all i had to do was yank the "starting sock" out of the intake.

I was trying to find a way to mount a can of ether to the mower frame (on the push handles) so I wouldnt have to stop mowing and spray the fluid. I had an idea, but the mower finally died.  :D

I also used an old soup can to repair the tail pipe on my first car in high school (1984 Nissan/Datusn Sentra).
