Title: 95 avenger relays??
Post by: Patrick on June 11, 2007, 05:18:23 PM
Well first off I am new here, my names Patrick, and I am switching from J-body's to avengers.I just bought a 1995 avenger 2.5 V6 auto that needs some work. First off when the key is turned on the fuel pump doesnt kick on,the previous owners said they had it running once by playing with the relays and managed to get it to fire, but nothing after that.I am going to replace the fuel pump relay, but I dont know what one it is. can someone tell me what each relay is on the firewall? there are 4 relays there. Thanks in advanced..
-Patrick

Well first off I think that napa gave me the wrong relay because it only has 4 prongs, and it only fits the ATX relay slot.Either way the fuel pump still doesnt kick on,does anyone know where to get all 4 of the relays online anywhere so I know i can get the right ones. I am going to replace the ASD relay aswell, and the local NAPA doesnt carry them..Anyone with any info it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance..

i was about to make a post with my question, kinda looks like the problem what i have....  although i think it could be ignition switch going bad.

here is the deal:  my car would die in a middle of driving.   try to start it up, i don't get fuel pump noise, no check engine/amp lights.  starter cracks but engine doesn't fire up.  after maybe letting car sit for 15-20mins, it starts up with out a problem (usually).  this happened to me for the 5th time  >:( >:( >:( >:(

could the relays overheat and mess up or something? or is possibly my ignition switch going bad?

please help

ps: sorry for post stealing  :-X

monitor voltage at the fuel pump ... no voltage when it shuts down the relay is bad

quick question, from atop of my head...  on the positive terminal there are 2 bundles of wires, does one of those bundles (2 white wires) go to the Relays?

if they DO, i might have found my problem  :-\

Randomly like it runs fine at an idle then shuts off, or when you come up to a stoplight, or when you are driving down the road...
define randomly

i could be driving on a street and it will die, i could pull to a stop light and it will die, i could be sitting at my house idling and it will die.... or i try to start it up and  it wont start up.

(again, i have all power - lock, windows, radio, STARTER... but no fuel pump or spark (i think) )

lol took it to my mechanic, he looked at it and said it was fine - he said maybe crank sensor is bad so he changed it today, started the car it was fine.  decided to take it for a test drive and.... lol.... literally it died right across the street from the shop.  when i came by the other guy said my mechanic has been sitting across the street trying to figure out how to start my car for an hour.  he called tow truck to get it across the street haha.

*sigh* he said it could be fuel pump.... but he is not sure exactly.  i'll check with him tomorrow.

i had the same exact problem took it to mechanics and no one could figure it out.....til one day i was messin around and banged on the asd relay and it started....after that when it wouldnt start i would pop the hood bang on the relay and it would start until i got a new relay....i know that a relay off of a neon will work and they cost a whole lot less thats for sure....

Did you do ANY troubleshooting or just replace the relays ???
Won't start ... Does it crank??? Do you hear the fuel pump fire??? do you have spark ???

Basically before i changed these relays, my 95 6cyl sebring jsut did nto start in the morning. It cranks but does not turn over.  There is no spark.  There is fuel cause i hear it turn on and sort of smell it in the engine bay area after a few attempts in starting the car.

I then buy these relays from napa, and for some reason, i dont hear my fuel pump prime anymore.  Not sure if these relays are not as good as the dealers.
I checked the power wires that run from the relays to the battery and they seem good.
Just a reminder, the car was driving fine until one morning it just happened.

TIA.

check fuel pump for power ....

Post by: B-man on August 21, 2007, 08:21:34 PM
how would i do that?
and would that cause the car not to have spark?
thanks

http://asog.net/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,30/topic,3085.0 gets you to the fuel pump check connector for power ...
since you replaced parts blindly I have to start from square one to see what you have /what you don't have ...
I'd normally guess the ASD relay (that you supposedly replaced) or the CPS...

ok, i'll check that, but as far as what else can be wrong, could the computer ? or ,.,. i dunno anymore, this car is nuts,.,.

For the post stealer...try rapping on the bottom of the fuel tank . The more likely failure is fuel pump in your scenario.

As for the no fuel pump at all issue. Can you put a spark plug in a wire and see if you have spark?

These cars with Chrysler electronics have to see rpm before they will do anything more than run the fuel pump for two seconds. No rpm...nospark or pump.

If you have consistent spark while cranking Rpm is good and crank position sensor is checking in

Then switch the asd and fuel pump relays to see if spark goes away and fuel comes back.
