Title: Trunk build-up.......LOTS OF PICS
Post by: Spazz on May 07, 2007, 01:15:06 PM
.  I had a whole mess of this crushed penne laying around in my garage from using it to do my interior 4 years ago.  With Cinco coming up, my husband and I decided I need an updated look in my car so I'm going to glass most of the interior and I wanted to put some coach fabric throughout.  Gonna take some time, so we tried to get the trunk done first, and I'll build the actual interior later.

So here is what I got done with the help of chad, his wife, (couple club members) and my husband...we put some long nights in but it looks awesome. Hope you enjoy....

Couple things we needed to accomplish......

-I picked up a couple 7 inch monitors so I needed to throw that in the trunk.

-I built a huge vented ported enclosure, but I didn't want to see it.

-Needed to utilize some coach fabric in the trunk.

-Next year I will be airbagging her car so, I need to keep room in the trunk.

-needs to be removable

-get it done by Cinco!

Okay here is a pic of the car its gonna go in...Its a 95 dodge avenger.....

This was at the Cinco de Mayo car show.... so the car made it, lets see if the trunk did

(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/8085/img0887om1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

first day....here is what her trunk used to look like....the penne looks like ass, my speaker box isn't covered....I had a special cover made for it that just slipped on for shows....but the penne just looks cheap in my trunk.

(http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/3152/img0728he2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Next up....we cut out the pieces to box the trunk off.  The main piece across the back could only be so big or else it wouldn't fit so I cut it the biggest I possibly could and made those 2 little pillars on either side to fill the gap...but I'll utilize them to give the trunk a little shape to it.

(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/43/img0729yk5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

we cut the frames out for the two monitors and routed them all to help the piece flow when stretching the material.  made a couple measurements to center them.

(http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/9858/img0741ug6.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

At first while I was at Home Depot...Joe (my husband) saw this backstrap excrement (kind of like that excrement you get with your deck to screw it to your firewall)  He thought it would be kind of sweet to just bend all my angles and screw it down.

(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/9402/img0740ny9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

But it really lacked sturdiness and getting the bends to mirror each other sucked ass.  It gives a good pic of where the screens will be....notice they are a little high in the trunk. couple reasons....room for the tank when we do air next spring and so if I want to roll with the trunk popped you can see the screens.

Anyway, we went with the traditional way...we just hot glued some wooden dowels to raise the frame for the screen.  I measured all the dowels to a given length and cut them so there wouldn't be any problems with symmetry (sp)

(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/7914/img0742ke7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

heres a couple pics with the screens...as you see the boards are just pressure fit in. we used 1/2" MDF

(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/5843/img0744tu9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/2103/img0745qb2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Next...the dodge avenger has a wierd curve in the dash area.  I was getting an in dash and didn’t want to deal with the screen not being able to go back a little so that I could view it, so we made raised the dash.
(http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/4263/img0747dx0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

here it is test fitted with some penne stretched over it.  its basically another 1/2" MDF wooden frame but alot of routing with a couple different bits to get it to sit flush with the curves of the existing dash piece. and then hot glued in place.

sorry its not rotated....

(http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/5300/img0746tv8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

this is tricky to explain but you can see I put some black "X's" to show which pieces I installed.  this was so I could make a seem between the side pieces and the main piece...You'll see what it does when I stretch fabric later.

(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/6012/img0756nj4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Now I started strectchin the crushed penne...its 100% polyester just like fleece.  I put it on backwards though...On the two side pieces you will see that its penne....

I only put 4 staples down the middle to bring out the curves otherwise everything was secured using staples on the back of the piece.

(http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/5147/img0757er4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

heres a little test fitting....Just trying to make sure the thickness of the material wasn't effecting the pressure fit of the board.

but excrement...we threw the screens in to make me feel like I made some progress.

(http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/9168/img0758oh9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Here are the side pieces with the penne stretched over them....we used a shitload of staples to make that nice seem on top and really bring out that curve.  you can kind of see where that piece with the black "X" I posted a few pics back...makes a seem between the two pieces.

(http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/9168/img0758oh9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/4314/img0762eq1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/9061/img0763ja4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Here we are getting ready to glass...I hot glued where the fabric and the frames for the screens go to hold it in place.

(http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/302/img0764ej0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Here we are all glassed up......and my husband is crossin his fingers that this penne excrement works.....WELL IT DOESN'T!  unlike fleece which stays nice and rigid while you glass....this excrement lost its shape faster than a chick after giving birth.....and it was flimsy as hell

(http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/8611/img0765ux8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

In the meantime...we started on her trunk lid.  Joe took a few measurements and kind of free handed the curves and got a nice fit.....we used 1/4" MDF cause its flexible.

Once joe could mount it to the trunk lid, he could trace the curve from the back of the trunk lid to get the shape I needed.

(http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/6089/img0768ny7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/5248/img0771io1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Got my little table covered with a couple trash bags so I could keep the coach material from getting dirty.  I thought making the trim rings out of coach would be kind of slick...nothing amazing but a nice touch

(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/3868/img0772lj0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

I cut some squares out and used 3M's super 90 spray adhesive....gotta support the local business

(http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/2324/img0773az2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

you can kind of see the "C's" from the coach...was hard to get with the camera but you can see em in the day light.

(http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/7967/img0775nm2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Got some 1/2 foam and traced out the trunk lid to give my coach fabric a little body to it.

(http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/4521/img0777pd0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

I also used Super 90 to glue the two pieces together....just make sure to give em' plenty of time to tack up.

(http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/8540/img0776iz8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

I then used more spay adhesive to glue the fabric down.....I bought some white screw caps to cover the screw heads.

(http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/5640/img0783lb2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Now back to this penne that proved to be one big fucking head ache after another

after seeing the main piece be so flimsey after Joe glassed the penne I went out and got some chop mat to put down while we glassed the other pieces....Joe always cut my chop mat in strips to cut down on the chance for bubbles

Joe glassed the penne and added chop mat in the same step...you gotta work fast and make sure to saturate all the way through

(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/1366/img0785vb7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

You can see how much the penne looses its shape once the heated reaction of the resin and the material take place....on the right side you can see that ugle curling....equals lots of body filler

(http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/186/img0786cx7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

I went back and sanded the main piece so Joe could apply chop mat to it...This ended up being a good idea anyway because we wouldn't have to worry bout sanding through the thin material while applying filler later.

once again, I use strips of chop mat and SATURATE!, Snapped a couple of these while my husband glassed it.
(http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/364/img0789aq7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Here I am sanding down the dash piece to prep it for body filler...

(http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/7059/img0793eg2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

the dash piece was tough cause it has so many small details so we went pretty liberal with the filler knowing we would sand a shitload down.

(http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/4180/img0794ly6.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Here I am laying down some body filler on the main piece.

(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/8381/img0796hi9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/3673/img0797bj0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

There is my husband and chad sanding down some of the pieces

(http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/5130/img0798ue0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

There is MAVERICK himself chad puttin in work later that night on a keg of champaigne (the high life).....it was his bday bonanza

(http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/4864/img0805om1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

back to the headache....here is 1 coat of body filler.....1 of many  you can see how many high spots I ended up with....what a disaster...stick to fleece EVEN IF YOU HAVE PENNE LAYING AROUND

(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/756/img0806lb2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Here is after I think 3 of 4 layers of body filler....we just had to keep building this excrement up cause it collapsed from the resin.....checking our gaps with the seams

(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/6885/img0809qn8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Chad brought up a good point and so a little side project I did was make little beauty rings for the gaps where the trunk lid bars are....

(http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/2897/img0810gv8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/8547/img0812wn6.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Here you can see how thrilled Joe is....this is now GALLON number 2 of body filler.

(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/2459/img0817cf8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Here we test fit the dash piece....Only needed 2 coats of body filler but we had to build up a couple tiny spots.

(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/9436/img0819wn0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

final fitment....you can see all the layers of body filler, fucking piece looks like a cheetah with all the spots on it.....paid off though starting to get extremely smooth and even

(http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/8438/img0820os4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

little view of the curve and checking our seams
you can see her "dated" crushed penne interior....

(http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/7558/img0823xf7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

last pic before primer....

(http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/8537/img0824wk7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

chad putting down first bit of primer....

(http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/2365/img0825lw2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

I went ahead and put a coat of primer on……perfect paint booth outfit

(http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/6878/img0849ja5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

started to feel good, but when we layed the primer we found a couple low spots....So we went back and layed some glaze down to build up those spots....

(http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/1293/img0845fo1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

coming down the stretch....after filling any pin holes with glaze and building up the couple low spots.....last layer of primer.....things are starting to look promising.

(http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/227/img0851yy2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/8140/img0852dn2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

time for paint....we went with a PPG its an off white that we had mixed since the coach fabric wasn't a bright white.

(http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/3240/img0854ef0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

couple interior pieces that had to get done....

(http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/5434/img0858nf5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/6268/img0860qh8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

FINALLY, after some wet sanding and buffing were there....matches the fabric pretty damn good too!  you can see I was test fitting those little beauty rings done in coach fabric.....got the TVs fired up.

(http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/6268/img0860qh8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/6198/img0861bo2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/3880/img0862vu1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

here are the dash pieces.....I bought a Jenson flip out to run the monitors....I do bass competitions so we have a nice alpine deck that we can swap in and out in 10 minutes but I'm kind of impressed with this Jenson...My husband prefers the kenwood flip out but for what I paid for it, he seemed pretty impressed.

(http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/4599/img0865ze5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

So to answer the question....yes the trunk made it to cinco....I also made a piece for the trunk floor very similar to how I did the trunk lid....It is made of 1/4" MDF and 1/2" foam and then covered in black coach fabric to match the trim rings.

(http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/9379/img0886br3.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

hope you enjoy....huge thanks to chad and his wife for puttin in some long ass nights....I'll try to keep the build up alive, next week or so I'll probably start her back seat area....its already been removed and has amps flush mounted but were gonna give it an updated look.

quality work, but i need to know , and this always bothered me with pimp my ride and other shows..... why put tv's in the trunk? do you sit behind the car and watch tv? maybe it scores points for car shows, but if they ever judged them with functionality in mind then it would never happen.... explain????

its all for show.....why do people do anything to cars?

why do people pump as many horsepower mods into an engine?....technically thats not functional, how much faster could do you need to drive if all a car is for is transit?

why even put a tv in ACTUAL viewing area?  people went years using books and travel games.

why put huge rims on a car? how is that functional?

why paint my car?  there was nothing wrong with the paint before...thats not very functional

why use designer fabric in the car?  That would seem frivalous (sp?)

I don't mean it to be bitchy (its not intended that way), I understand exactly what you're saying  ;D I just did the same thing at a car show last year, I saw tvs in the trunk and asked my husband....why the hell would you need them in the trunk.  I did it because I had them laying around and it seemed like a nice accent at a show.  I don't expect everyone to like it, to each there own. :)  But when you think about it, unless it gives you better gas mileage; is there ever any REAL functional mod?  :-\

yeah it does score points at shows. around here for every screen you have its 2 points added. for every inch of wire shown its 1 point off. and the list goes on and on

who cares do you like it then put it on/in thats hwat i think though tvs arent my style i still think they look cool and the job that you all did in the trunk is amazing great work!

whats up everyone?  how bout a little update.  I spent the last 2 months completing as much of the interior of the car as I could.  Long ways to go, but I figured I would continue the painted/coach fabric theme on the inside to match my trunk....

As usual I did all the work myself.... My husband and other fellow club members guided me with any questions I had, but it was very similar to all the work I did last year to the trunk.  First I gutted all of the interior, then I sanded everything, then I primered,  I sanded some more :-\, I primered again :-\, and a final sanding >:(.....from there the paint and clear was done by Chad from my club.  Then I reinstalled everything carefully.  There is still some touches that need to be done and hopefully I'll be getting some nice seats soon.....heres some pics to snack on. ;D

The poopy part was I did all this work for our cinco de mayo show, which is always the "whats everyone been working on this winter" break out show, but it was a damn monsoon so low turn out. :-[

pics are uploading.....

So when can I drop my car off to get my interior done?? LOL

That looks really good.  I wish I had the patients to pull everything out and take the care to do it right.  There's only a few pieces on my interior that have any painting and I was sick of doing it almost as soon as I started!!

I got sick of it rather quickly....you're from wisconson, do it during the winter like I did.....My husband was working on another club members car, so while he did that every weekend I brought a few pieces to work on.  I did it little by little, but I wasn't too impatient :-X because I couldn't take the car out anyway.   I still took it right up to the deadline and I started doing this way back in the middle of february.   Some of it is painted, the doors and dash are vinyl so rather than fiberglass, and bondo, I wanted to keep a semi factory look so I bought some SEM vinyl paint.  Thats stuff sucks too....

I'll probably pay to have it done.  I can't stand painting.  I need a completely revamped interior anyway.  My seat leather is beat to hell.  But the car will be out for winter for some more engine work so who knows......

Nah, just gotta find the use for them that suits you.
is there ever any REAL functional mod?  :-\
lol. Yeah, i modified my cupholder to work.

Very nice work btw. What shade of purple is that or do you have a color code available?
Also, what did you mean specifically when you said that the SEM sucks?

as far as SEM sucking......its alot of prep.  If you don't really take your time and follow directions you'll get reactions in the paint when you spray it.  the first test piece I did had fish eye and crackled on me.....but I slowed down and really prepped the heck out of it and let every stage properly dry and I got good results....

two and a half months with no income means I have to see my funding options.  Maybe a Saturday Sunday pass for 25 bucks.  I'm assuming you're showing again this year?

I hear that.  We didn't go last year because everyone in the club was in your boat.  Plus everyone was feeling like they're asking for more money and its really not worth the hassle.  Gonna give it one last try this year. :-[ :-\

strip your car interior....put the screws back in after you remove whatever item you are doing that way they are in place when you put them back AND you don't have to figure out which screw goes where.  You're other alternative would be buy some sandwich bags and put all the screws from certain pieces in the bag and mark the bag very specifically.

If you are going to paint your doors and dash, you can't because of the vinyl.  You can either SEM like I did or Fiberglass and bondo them.  We were under time constraints so I just SEM'd it.

I invested in a little random orbital sander for like 40 bucks.  Then I bought some 80 grit sandpaper.  Some 80 grit for the sander and then some additional sheets for hand sanding in those hard to get areas.  I would use the orbital to cut labor time significantly.  Basically sand the excrement out of everything til' its knocked down really good and scuffed up.

May want to take the time to fiberglass and cracked or broke pieces, I had 2 pieces that needed small patch work, you can't tell now though.

Wipe everything down with a paint prep solution and then spray with a high build primer.  Spaying primer is not very hard.  I would spray real heavy so you don't sand through real easy.

After spraying primer use a real fine grit sand paper to smooth the primer.  On some pieces you may have to reprimer and spray depending on if you sand through to the plastic again.

You can glaze any pinholes left by the primer

otherwise paint, clear, wetsand and buff
