Title: Spark Plug Wires, are these overkill?
Post by: ChubbZ on May 05, 2007, 03:39:42 AM
http://cgi.ebay.ca/95-99-NEON-STRATUS-AVENGER-7-CORE-SPARK-PLUG-WIRES-96_W0QQitemZ200105824131QQihZ010QQcategoryZ33692QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
they are 10.5mm, would they be alright to use, or should I look at 8mm ones?

I think any performance wire is overkill on a stock ignition. With any wire you really don't know it's performance without testing them. Some of the over the counter cheaper sets are actually better. A lot of it is just marketing crap.

well, since alain isn't here, i'm gonna post what he would say.  Any spark plug wire that you get will not add any horsepower or any benifit to a stock engine, assuming you are stock.  also, i had 9.8 mm on my sebring when i had it and they didn't do anything that the stock ones didn't do.

I concur

There nice though.  ;)

For that price, I want a set to...

I'll PM you Chubbz.

Personally, I would say that those are overkill.  Remember, there is only so much voltage can travel through the air in the spark plug gap.

Great for the price though, and good if you want the looks, and will help some if you plan to upgrade your ignition later on down he road.

Just my .02

What ignition components would I upgrade to make the plug wires most useful? Also I was thinking about picking up a MSD Coil Pack, are all 95's round pin?

If you are going to do your ignition, here is what you need to know:

The benifits of upgrading are there, but not really noticable without further modifiaction.

You will need:
MSD 6A Ignition
MSD BLASTER 3 coil
MSD Vibration Mounts
MSD Coil Bracket and the other mounting hardware
Modified Distributor Cap (make one yourself, to add the connection to the new coil)
NGK copper core spark plugs are your best bet
You might as well get a new rotor and distributor cap, but practice the mod on the old cap first.

You are going to be looking at a few hundred dollars, and there are only a few benifits.

-a bit more powerful spark
-you can now make slight adjustments to your timing

This is good if you want to run on premium gas and want to tweak the timing a bit (premium takes longer to combust)

Good luck with things

Pardon my noob, but how do I make a new rotor and distributor cap? I thought only the V6 had cap and rotor, do you mean the coil pack where the plug wires connect to? Also the vibration mounts are for mounting the 6A Ignition right? Wheres the best place to mount the 6A ignition? I will need the MSD coil pack when I'm done with the stock one right? All this is a learning experience for me, I just want to make sure I don't mess anything up lol

Only the Sixes have the rotor.  Cory has the V6 and probably got a bit confused.

Does what I have to do to upgrade the ignition on the l4 differ a whole lot from the V6?

Man, I'm really sorry about all that.  I just went and assumed you had the v6.   :-[

Is the list for l4 completely different?

HAHA!.. Chubbz I also didn't realize you had a 4 banger to ... I PM'd you about the plugs again.

What should I buy to upgrade my 4 bangers ignition, I looked around and found something called MSD DIS-2 but its like $400

What are you talking about it says Cory............ :-\

I have the DIS-2 and it'll go on when the rest of the motor is done.  I got it dirt cheap.  Keep an eye on eBay.

jesus

ok back to 2001

MSD coil pack is a plain and stock coil pack in red
ricer's best friend , benefits none except the red color  ;D
the screamin demon is the only coil who brings a higher voltage but ricers don't like them because they are in plain black like the oem

plain stock wires are good enought for 300 hp no need to upgrade no need for something bigger
and if you go bigger just buy mopar performance wires they are good for 800 hp at least
the choice and mostly THE RIGHT GAP of the plugs is the key for a healthy and strong ignition

Ebay HP advertising are done on the Ebay dyno , a mysterious dyno hidden in a mormon's county you take the number advertise , you divided by 5, times 1.5, divide by 4, times 3.1416 , divide again by 5.2456454 and you have your real hp gain

ebay wires are cheap well ... it's mostly because they are cheaply made

msd6 are for pussies aka v6 owners only  ;)
dis-2 are for peoples who wants to spend cash on show cars trailer queen

Now I feel better thank you

Alain

EDIT: NVM found one

I dunno where you looked but you might check summit racing.

Howellautomotive.com also has one.

On a side note, I love reading Alain's rants   ;D

For the record, if you do your research and ask him an educated question he is very helpful.  8)

100% True.

Summit doesn't have one, Howell does but they only sell the flat pin type.

I'm almost positive 95's are flat pin. 96+ has the round pin. Now that is if your coil is original to the car and not replaced with a round pin coil using the harness adapter.

and you are postively 100% wrong  ;D

95 and some early 96 has round pins
mid 96 and up have flat pin
an adaptor is available at chrysler but it's expensive
better do a junkyward run for a few parts on a Do It Yourself place and stuff your underwear with flat pin connectors while you are there
